Yes they did.They didn't use roundshot and it would have been a damn good(brave?,foolish?)gunner who set a shell fuse for close range!! |

Howitzers were often considered better for cannister than guns, since they tended to have larger bores. Also, I believe Russian Licorns (Unicorns) were a sort of early gun/howitzer that could fire ball, but not as far or with as much velocity as a gun. Rob |

Also, I believe Russian Licorns (Unicorns) were a sort of early gun/howitzer that could fire ball, but not as far or with as much velocity as a gun. That's because the licorne, as well as the "secret" Shuvalov howitzer, had a reduced chamber in which the powder was placed. This resulted in a smaller propellant charge than a gun of similar size. from what I believe a cannon has a shot gun effect with cannister while Howitzers are like scatter-guns
correct me if wrong. |
