What is the general opinion on the merits of this 1995 book? |

I like it a lot. I'm no expert. But, I think it is a solid overview of Frederick's wars. Showalter's books are usually pretty good. YMMV. Thanks, John |

A better book would be "The Military Life of Frederick the Great" by Christopher Duffy. Showalter provides a view at 30,000 feet whereas Duffy gets into more detail, spins a few good yarns and anecdotes, and delivers opinions. Well worth the read. |

For what it's worth Showalter's book was on the reading list of the first year diplomatic history course I took ten years ago. I've been thinking about rereading it; I remember enjoying it but I've forgotten the details. |

I "second" the Duffy "Military Life of Frederick" recommendation. |

The books are certainly complimentary, and both are examples of work by excellent historians. Showlater has a tendency towards casaul language, which puts some people off, but the content is sound. |
