The discovery of a skull of a young woman who almost certainly was subjected to trepanation in the III century A.D. in the town of Veria, northern Greece, again has focused the attention of modern science on this surgical procedure very popular in ancient times, not only as a method of treatment but also as a spiritual and religious practice. link |

I think it is used for Compressed Fracture of the skull. Like getting hit with a blunt object or falling and hitting your head on a rock and there is a indented skull fracture. I think Master and Commander has a scene where the Doc performs the operation, and then replaces part of the skull with a coin. |
