I just received Don Troiani's Civil War by Don Troiani and Brian C. Pohanka for my birthday. I couldn't have picked a more inspirational ACW painter's book myself. I think it's fantastic. |

I buy every one I can get my hands on -- and I'm not a real big ACW fan. Some of Don's Books have AWI and figures from other wars. Great stuff. mjc |

Superb books and worth every penny I paid for them. I would love to own one of his original paintings, but I couldn't stretch the budget that far. If you haven't seen his work before I would suggest that you have a look at some of these. link I couldn't do them justice trying to explain why you need them with words. |

Terain Sherlock, Don Troiani is considered the premiere artist of civil war paintings. Not only is his work the absolute best in style and composition, but in Historical Authenticity. He has one of the most impressive collections of original uniforms and equipment which he bases his paintings from and includes pictures of them also in his book. |

Worth it worth it worth it! Troiani's paintings almost come across like journalistic snapshots. The man's personal collection of Civil War uniforms and artifacts is among the finest in the world. He uses so many of these items as basis for what he paints(and literally copies original soldier's items onto canvas), he almost achieves what amounts to a "photographic snapshot" of a battle in oil paint. What he does is entirely unique in the world of military art. Nobody else comes close. He does not fool around with this subject matter! This man will spend three years researching a painting before he ever puts a brush to canvas. He gets the weather down, the humidity level down, the vegetation down, the lighting for the time of day down, and of course the uniforms pinned down, everything is researched so that by the time he actually paints a battle scene, he's eerily almost doing time travel through his art! There is no better resource for miniatures painters or reenactors or living historians. I personally recommend "Soldiers in America" and "Don Troiani's Civil War". These two volumes offer up the widest variety of his work and the most consolidated collections of his battle scenes. Soldiers in America is wonderful for studies of individual soldiers, both from the Civil and the American Revolution, as well as a few studies of British soldiers from the 1750's and 1760's. Mike |
