For some reason they seem out of fashion in the mags, but I just love reading & looking at them, so any votes?

To start it off, I vote for this (you have to scroll down):

Very nice. The terrain and figures are first rate.

Well done.

The true place for battle reports is on the web, not magazines IMO.

You can put as many photos in as you want. You can side link to historical details.

They're basically emphemera, albeit often fun and popular, so there is no need to have them filed away on paper.

fred12df29 Apr 2008 2:18 p.m. PST

Very nice! Great photos, great models and great presentation

Ditto Tango 2 129 Apr 2008 2:23 p.m. PST

Wow that's spectacularly well done. Layout, approach to reporting the game, and, of course, the models and terrain are beautiful.

I may adopt that method for my next battle report.

nice I like the comic book look of the report,

I think that rules system needs some deadly area of effect weapons to stop the close order vehicle line ups even being that close to another tank that gets hit by an AT or HE round will damage the one next to it and if you miss one your shot would mostly hit the one next to it. Besides the fact that it looks so wrong having them almost touching lined up side to side like that.

Aye, well done!

Ditto Tango 2 129 Apr 2008 2:42 p.m. PST

Questor, I guess it depends on the rules being used. It seems that sometimes with rules with higher representation scale, ie, a tank is a platoon or more of tank sort of thing this occurs. Plus I know in 1:72 (I'm not sure what scale the report was), this often happens because of real estate and model size.

In my own amour rules, if you have tanks closer than 4", if one gets hit and destroyed, the firing weapon gets a free additional shot that automatically hits the other, so you roll for effect right away (I do a roll to hit, then a roll for effect).

Love the look of the table and the figs. The style of the report is fun with a comic book flavor.

But I must confess, the images provide precious little about what the heck was going on. It's exceptionally difficult to determine the deployements (where were the nebelwerfers deployed?) and neigh impossible to understand the tactics (who were the recce scouting for?). I prefer a more static treatment of the establishing shots--one consistent wide angle shot where you might circle the deployement areas. And then keep the close up images consistent with the establishing shot. Only deviate for the most important game winning/loosing points.

mweaver29 Apr 2008 4:37 p.m. PST

I enjoyed it. More for the pictures than for the "battle report" per say.

I'm curious: I noticed a lot (but not all) of the tanks had been placed on stands. What's the advantage?

Dragon Gunner29 Apr 2008 4:49 p.m. PST

Thanks for sharing very nice pictures.

Gallowglass29 Apr 2008 5:05 p.m. PST

Gaming- Irish style.

Well done the Newbridge Boys!!!

Jedispice29 Apr 2008 11:54 p.m. PST

Nice eye candy, but x-nay on the tactics. And the texts really doesn't explain what's going on either, first there's a company of panthers attacking, then one Panther's knocked out, and in the end, the last surviving Panther retreats. What happened to the rest of the company??? Now I happen to know they were playing Rapid Fire, so the company were just three tanks, but unless you know that you just can't make heads or tail out of it.

But yes, lots of good pictures, and a visually stunning presentation.

christot30 Apr 2008 1:21 a.m. PST

truly gorgeous game, and really nicely presented report ….
as for the tactics ……

"Now I happen to know they were playing Rapid Fire"

and that sort of says it all really!
cheers chris

Oh, cool report! Sure, you can't really tell what's going on (game-wise), but it looks great.

Sir James30 Apr 2008 5:55 a.m. PST

I love the "comic book" layout style!

jameshammyhamilton30 Apr 2008 6:25 a.m. PST

I really liked the report and the style, some of the miniatures were outstanding.

The best WWII game report I have seen recently was this one from the FoW forums: link

mawaliuk230 Apr 2008 8:50 a.m. PST

Slightly disappointed there were no speech bubbles saying "Donner und Blitzen" and "Crikey", but that is just nit-picking. :-)

Great work!

SBminisguy30 Apr 2008 9:09 a.m. PST

Very nice! Was that the product of Photoshop, or did you use another program to compile the report??

pancerni30 Apr 2008 9:34 a.m. PST

Great looking game and report but, as has been mentioned, there is a disconnect between the amount of armor and infantry in this game…not to mention the tactical disposition of the armor.

Yeah, very pretty eye candy. But did this need to be cross-posted to every battle report board on the forums?

I share Zen's comment, and would like to add:

This battle report is not fantasy. It is WW2.

That is all.

Cacadores02 May 2008 5:36 p.m. PST

Thanks to the Newbridge Club for the game and report: it just struck me as being a bit special. 20mm, using Kellys Heroes, Battlefield and SHQ with a few Foundry.

Zenwired & phobia: I thought it might be WW2:-) I was really inviting people to stick up other links on here to their own nominations for best game report – from whatever period or style – and we could compare them to get good ideas. If you know of a top fantasy report: bring it on, let's have a look!

GamerX 30 Apr 2008 9:09 a.m. PST
''Very nice! Was that the product of Photoshop, or did you use another program to compile the report??'' I dunno what they used, I'm afraid. The borders and boxes and stuff can be done just as well in MS Paint but I'd like to know what font they used.

So anyone got any reports done better?

Mal Wright Fezian02 May 2008 6:34 p.m. PST

Brilliant. I have a reputation for insisting on presenting good terrain, but I doff my hat to them. Really well done.

malcolmmccallum05 May 2008 7:12 a.m. PST

The tool was Comic book creator.
