Saturday saw the latest Society of Ancients Battle Day, held in Bletchley. soa.org.uk/battleday.asp This was an excuse for several groups of gamers from across the country to get together to re-enact a particular battle in miniature – this year it was the Battle of Poitiers. A good days gaming was had by all, and many thanks to the SOA for putting on the event. I managed to take a few pictures (though the lighting in the hall was pretty poor, so some of the photos didn't come out that well) but at least these show the many variations on a theme that were played by the particiapants on the day. link Ranging from DBM, DBMM, DBA, Warmaster Ancients, Armarti, Piquet right through to Battlelore and Command & Colors: Ancients (Our own group's contribution) – plus a few other rule sets which currently escape me, with figures ranging from 10mm to 28mm, it just goes to show that there is no such thing as a 'standard' set of rules for this period! |

Hi I agree that everyone seemed to have a great day. Looking at your photos, the one labelled "DBMM" is actually my Arcane Warfare/Arcane Battle Composer game. Looks like my son's English knights are about to finish off kicking my French butt

No worries! Maybe next year we should be encouraged to have signs on each table so it is clear what is what! |

An excellent day indeed and very interesting to see how a wide variety of rules dealt with a potentially very unbalanced battle. Most of the games seemed to go the way of history with the English & Gascons victorious. There seemed however to be some variation in the odds of the result being upset, from no chance of a French victory to it being close run thing (against me!) |

I must have been on of the few English players that lost
and I managed to lose not once, but twice! |

I am definitely going to make an effort to attend next year(missed it this year)
SOA battledays are always good events with a nice relaxed atmosphere and you even get a historical lecture or two thrown in. |

Summat Naval perhaps? Or Goose Green. That was a very interesting one tactically, especially playing as the Argies. |

Carrhae to be honest. Cataphracts are easy to paint! |

mawaliuk2, something with Romans. Actually pretty well anything with Romans would suit me! If we did a Civil War battle, with Romans on both sides, that would be even better. ;-) There will probably be a couple of hundred thousand plastic Legionaries knocking around by next April, and some of them should be given employment. Personally I've always fancied doing Forum Gallorum, which is little known but very well documented for an ancient battle, and features Mark Antony, to boot. Simon |
