If anyone is going to Historicon this July you may want to consider the following. I have secured space in the Paradise Room to run Mockern, October 16th, 1813 in 25mm on a 6'x24' table using the Carnage and Glory computer moderated rules. We'll be runnig the game on both Friday and Saturday…it should take the better part of each day. There are 16 Allied commands and 9 French commands…the Carnage and Glory rules are made for this type of game and allow anyone to get up to speed on the rules in 30 minutes and jump right in.

The game is included in the Historicon PEL, so if you're interested sign up to play. If you have any questions post them here or on the Carnage and Glory Yahoo group.

I just read about this battle in Digby Smith's book about leipzig.

realy great read, I didn't even know about it before I read it.

made me realy wanting to do the battle, but I got so manye things going at the moment, so I have to wait and see, I also might wait for the 1:500 figs to come out, if the Preussen gets made

My Knowledge of Historicon comes only from the pages of Wargames Illustrated, so I thought that,'the Dukes tm' games were on at the show! ;-)

Good luck with the game lads, hope you've checked you are allowed to put it on, and don't expect any coverage in WI!!
Call yourselves 'prince', or 'Emperor' that may help!, only kidding, good luck with the game, oh, and get well soon, Dukey-boy.

" I just read about this battle in Digby Smith's book about leipzig. realy great read, I didn't even know about it before I read it."

I concur. For me, Smith's book is one of THE most inspirational books out there about the Napoleonic wars.

There are many equally well-researched books out there, each holding a special place in my library, but Smith really does knows how to write a good story.

yeah the book is great, and the Möckern chapter is the best so far, I'm about to start on the third day on monday 18th

I actuall found Nafziger's account of Mockern more useful than Smith's in preparing for this game.

what I liked about it was that the whole german liberation could be put in to that small battle.

I liked the whole payback feel about, showing that the Pruessians were now just as good as the french.

very kick ass feel of the thing

Gunfreak,

I just went back and looked at the Digby Smith description of Mockern and it confirmed my initial recollection…his narrative of the fight between the Russians and Poles over Klein Widderizsch and Gross Widderizsch seems significantly flawed. He has the Poles retreating 3 kilometers to Euteritzsch and then returning and he does not differentiate between Klein Widderizsch and Gross Widderizsch. He also seems to dismiss desperate back and forth struggle between the Poles and Russians.

The Paradise Room sounds just the right place to run a 25mm refight of Mockern! Wish I could be there. Any chance of seeing some pictures afterwards?

I have both books. Nafziger's is probably the better researched (his order of battle is really comprehensive and indeed is quoted in Smith's), and when in doubt over details I tend to go with Nafziger in the absence of being able to corroborate sources.

But it is after having read Digby Smith that I find myself really wanting to get out and paint miniatures!

I wish that more was available on the Leipzig campaign. Unfortunately, for every one book of Leipzig there must be ten on Waterloo.

And I do hope pictures will be taken of this game and posted up on the web somewhere! Sounds like being a lot of fun.

Good luck in the Paradise room in the summer, just hope it's not above 80 becuase it will feel just like a green house, only more smelly & disgusting.

They remodeled Paradise before last Historicon and I ran a game in there last July. I think they improved the air conditioning and put in glazed windows to cut down on the sunlight. You may be thinking about the Kinderhook Room, down at the end of the hall…now that room has issues.

"it will feel just like a green house, only more smelly & disgusting."

I've known gaming venues like that more often than I care to admit…
