Archaeologists have revealed plans to uncover the 2000 year-old tomb of ancient Egypt's most famous lovers, Cleopatra and the Roman general Mark Antony later this year.

Zahi Hawass, prominent archaeologist and director of Egypt's superior council for antiquities announced a proposal to test the theory that the couple were buried together.

I'd love to be part of that dig.

I hope that one of the National Geographic channels covers it – they did that with some cameras and an unknown passageway in one of the pyramids a while back, exciting stuff. Sadly it didn't reveal much (just another blockage IIRC) but it was gripping TV.

me too and I am even an archeologist (who now studies War Studies… but it's another matter)

To quote Mr. Spock, "fascinating." grin

Thanks for the post Bill.

I'd be interested to know how long its been underwater? It could be unlikely that much would still remain. I'm doing Intro Archaeology (Egyptian) this year at Uni, it makes me wish I was taking it as a major, and try to get out there on a dig. Still so much cool stuff to find.

uhm… the article is a bit vague on the type of water (salt marsh, sweet) deep and other detail. And also if the tomb is sumbmerged or simply the area (being in the nile delta) is swampy and need to be drained before anging in real digs (also they seems to have a basical map… thus it looks like they have done some initial prospections… but who knows.

Arrigo, I can relate. I have a BS in Anthropology and a BS in Chemistry and I paint figures for a living. Go figure!

Will they find the asp?

Phobos26 Apr 2008 4:59 a.m. PST

Hehehe… That sounds like the many Alexander the Great tombs and nearly as many other Cleopatra tombs found in the last century. Zahi Hawass is a great publicist but he's been announcing amazing finds too often. How I wish I were wrong tho…

So the priest says:
We do all sorts of themed mummification.
How would you like tem mounted.

To which the Eunuch replied.
It sounds rather disrespectful.
How about just holding hands.

Boom Boom..

While I sincerely hope that they are successful, I doubt that anything will come of it.

The simple fact is, no one, including Zahi, knows where the site is, and at this point it remains complete speculation.

Oh, how I would love to be proved wrong!

Personally, I don't care if Hawass takes up Eddie Izzard's drag routine for presenting ancient history; if he gets more people here in the States interested in the subject matter, then so much the better I say! evil grin

(on second thought, maybe Hawass can leard from Izzard, as *he* is hilarious AND on target!)
