Can I use the new AB figures as gliderborne infantry for Americans, I know it has probably been asked before so please forgive my ignorance

Glider troops were issued the same uniforms as regular ground troops. Which teed them off a little BTW!

In addition, Glider troops did not get jump pay (hazardous duty) like the paratroops. Certainly seems more dangerous than jumping out of a plane (20-20 hindsight).

Should glider troops be considered elite like the Paratroops or regulars?

Feedback please!

It varies, as a whole they'd be regulars but some btn better than others just as in the Paras.

It's often forgotten that within the US 82nd and 101st Airborne, the glider troops WERE the divisions. They were the original troops who were there when the divisions were converted from infantry to airborne. The parachute regiments were raised and trained separately and only attached to the divisions later on.

War gamers love to slap the elite label on anything it can stick to.

So the whole 82nd or the entire Waffen SS become ‘elite'. Lazy research.

Even within the airborne divisions some units had more experience and a better cadre than others.

IMO you have to look into a unit in detail, how was it raised, what experience has it had, has attrition been unsustainable, what replacements has it had, and then how much training as a unit to absorb the new meat into a cohesive unit.

The GIR units probably didn't have as much Elan as the PIR units, nor the same rigorous training. But when all the old sweats have become casualties or been promoted that probably matters less and less. There can be a tradition of living up to a high standard, but it can be overrated. Just because you've got the shoulder patch doesn't mean much by itself.

GIR could perform amazing feats of arms. The assault across the causeway at La Fiere in Normandy must have taken immense courage.

I always thought it interesting that in the classic movie "Battleground" about the defense of Bastogne, the characters in the film are all glider infantry rather than parachute infantry. :)
