Just thought I would share this. I have just started a new project – 6mm Punic Wars using Baccus figures. Rules will be FoG, but the figures will be based on 20mm wide bases and all distances will be halved. This will allow games on a 3' x 2' board. The only problem was what to base the figures on – I do not enjoy chopping bases, especially not this small! My solution? 20mm square mozaic tiles from the local art shop. Available in a range of greens and browns, thick enough to give you something to grap hold of, and nice and cheap – a small bucket full for around £5.00 GBP Off to start painting now! |

good idea ! Are they heavy ? |

Let us know how the rules work at that scale, and with square bases. |

Hey, I live in the states, I just got an order of Quart sized box o bases from Gale Force 9. I used 50mm X 20mm for mostly Legions and Hoplites, they are very nice, and only 12.50 for about 200 thick wooden bases. Ship time was 2 days. FANTASTIC!!!! |

Kreoseus2 – not heavy, they are rigid plastic. Lentulus – OK – if it all works well I might start a blog or something with pictures. Will let you know. psioloi – sounds like a good deal to me too! |

Both of those sound like good ideas for cheap pre-cut bases. |

Renaissance Ink can custom cut the base sizes. For 6mm figs the Thin Plastic with Magnet or Sheet Metal bases look great. renaissanceink.net |

20mm square mozaic I am basing my 15mm armies on squares as well. One of the problems with playing FOG with squares is that a pike formation will look a bit silly. With WRG, pikes are on 40X15 bases. FoG wants you to line these bases 4 deep. With a 12 stand formation, That will be 60mm deep by 120mm wide. If you use 20mm squares, that will be 60mm wide by 80mm deep. It will look more like a column than a deployed formation. That is the only drawback I see to square bases and FoG. Avoid Hellenistic armies and you should be fine looks wise. Other thoughts. Baccus heavy infantry comes on strips of 4 that fit neatly into a 5mm deep space by 20mm wide. I know with WSS stuff, you can butt the stands together to make a single stand. You don't really need basing material. I assume that a lot of the ancient stuff, you can do the same. John |

Thanks for the comments about depth – at the moment I am focusing on the Punic Wars, so avoid the pike issue. I was thinking that I might expand to include Seleucids for Magnesia and will have to think about this issue – perhaps I will rationalise that my figures are representing double depth formation adopted at that and other battles
Thanks again. |
