Which pair of armies in the renaissance would give you the most varied battles? Looking for variation in troop types mostly. Thanks, Bevan |

I guess you need to be a bit more specific. The Renaissance covers lots of time and depending on where you want to focus your efforts – in the Balkans? or Italy? or the low countries? or in the Rhineland? Loads of different areas. The Imperialist armies come from all over as they can have Spanish, German, Austro-Hungarian, and even Turkish type troops depending on the theater of operations. The French have quite a variety of troop types too. So, where were do you want your armies to come from as the difference between an Imperialist army in the Rhineland and their French opponents would be fairly minimal, whereas the Papal states or the fighting in Italy would bring in several different troop types, depending on the era you are fighting in. |

1. Ottomans vs Spanish or Holy Roman Empire 2. Spanish vs. Aztec Ottomans have a mix of Sipahi and light horse and a wide variety of infantry including the famous Janissaries. The Spanish or Germans field Knights, pike and shot. The Germans are good for some Reiters also. The Aztecs give you a warband-ish army
totaly different from the Conquistadores. Mike B |

I'd say French, Holy Roman Empire and Ottomans. Even the English can be rather varied, the 16C is proberly my favorite peroid because of such varied troops. |

I'd agree on Ottomans but the Poles can have quite a varied force as well. They can have western troops, polish traditional cav, cossacks, Tartars and more. |

I did an Aztecs versus Landsknechts battle once and found it to be quite interesting. Don't ask me how the two would've ever encountered each other in the real world, though. |

"Aztecs versus Landsknechts" Not entirely inconcievable -- Cortez gets his clock cleaned the first time, goes back and explains mountains of gold to Charles V who decides to send along some of his German subjects this time. Anyway, a lot does depend on the period you want. For historical match-ups the Hussite wars give quite an asymetrical situation. |

Moghul vs Ming, or Moghul vs Ottomans Check out the Moghuls in DBR army list, they have every troop type except Pike. |

New world has to be a favourite whether Aztecs, Inca or Mayans versus Spanish Conquistadors, gets my vote every time |

OK let's do this scientifically. Aztecs (Incas, Mayas) – scratch – lots of cool infantry but no cavalry or artillery. Ottomans – scratch – too many units wearing just white. Poles – scratch – nice heavy cavalry but the rest are booring. Ming – ? – I haven't seen the Scheltrum figures Venetians – scratch – has lots of good troop types but doesn't really have the color we're looking for Spanish – scratch – not enough color Samurai -scratch – colorful but not enough troop types This leaves us with three choices: French – winner – everything you could hope for in a Renaissance army Spanish/HRE – winner – even more troop types if you bring in Hungarians et al Moghuls – winner – fantastic troop types full of color. You could run the French versus Moghuls or Spanish/HRE versus Moghuls. This will give you your greatest variation for the buck. Plus it has the advantage of being scientific. :))) Rich |
