I'm doing a scenario for Crete 1941 and the allied forces had a 4" naval gun emplaced on a hill. I realise I'll have to scratch build it, but I've never seen a piccie of one. Has anyone spotted one on their internet travels?

There were a variety of different types, so more specifics would be needed. That said, to take a guess at the type, here's a WWI vintage RN model; a likely shore-based cast-off by 1941.

Thanks for that. I guess that equipment on Crete would have been of an older type. Unfortunately I don't have any more details.

Just pick a likely suspect then, or go for whatever looks about right. Depending on scale you may well be able to get a suitable model too; 1/72 is a common ship modelling scale, and I know of at least one decent range in 1/96 which will suit 15mm. 28mm is tougher, but there may well be something suitable in 1/48, especially if you're willing to settle for a US gun, as they're better covered, and frankly most wargamers (me included) can't tell one naval gun from another anyway….

Try looking here – both actual photos of emplaced guns and in another section, plans/line drawings from offical manuals.

Thanks for the links, very useful. Dom, where do I get hold of the 1:96 stuff? It's 15mm I'm looking for.

Two firms offhand; John Haynes and H-R Products; if you're in a hurry I'd look up John Haynes and see what they've got, if not I'd go with H-R, and order via the Floating Drydock, H-R tend to be slow turning stuff around, but do a nice range and are very reasonably priced. I've not bought much on the ship front for a while, but the Floating Drydock were always very hassle free to deal with:

Code S8-56 is a single open mount 4" gun….
