I took a few shots of the game at Salute.

There are more in the Show Gallery on my site.

I liked the metal figures a great deal, but not the plastics I'm afraid.

What didn't you like about the plastics?

WarWizard21 Apr 2008 8:18 a.m. PST

Are all those in the gallery from Salute 2008?

jrbatso,
The plastics are soft on detail to my eye compared to metal figures. That may just be my age. They have no 'heft' in the hand when painting, just preference I know. Don't like officers with no badges of rank because they 'must do' for both sides.
War Wizard,
No, those on pages 4{lower part} & 5 are from Salute. I don't like the 'industrial scale' of Excel halls, it tends to dwarf the games and spoil the look of the event I think, it has no soul that building. I always end up underwhelmed by the whole day really. Still, I go again the following year, always in hope I will enjoy it more…

While I respect your opinion YankeePedlar, I must disagree with you. I had opportunity to see the plastics at Salute and they seemed just as sharp as the metals. This can be seen here:

As for the officers, that is a very good point. I'm sure we'll be buying metal officers which I suspect the Perrys will provide in due course. As for painting, I usually base my miniatures and then paint them on top of a paint pot (or similar) stuck down with blu tack or similar, so weight is not an issue for me. Once I have them magnabased, it'll be even less of one.

I know of a local gaming club which all together bought 60 (!!!) boxes (both infantry and cavalry) for their members.

Cheers,

Guy

Guy,
Enjoyed your reply. I based my opinion on painting some I was given. Having recently finished painting hundreds of their Sudan figures I found the plastics a disappointment by comparison. Obviously they were doing brisk business at Salute, so I'm clearly in a minority ~ for now at any rate. I di nt mean to imply the figures were poor, just that I did nt like them as a painting experience.

That's a fair comment. My experience comes from painting plastics before (mainly GW Empire, now converted into Renaissance HRE). Sudan eh? Nice! That is a period I'm doing my best not to think too hard about…

The lack of rank insignia is a good point, although especially late-war officers in the Eastern Theater took to wearing insignia-less tunics and coats, while in the West they were much less formal about the uniform thing
