Just got a box of these. They're very nice, but to me they look smaller than my Perry AWI miniatures. Not shorter; just smaller. Anyone else notice this? |
| Pictors Studio | 20 Apr 2008 9:23 a.m. PST |
They do look that way on the sprue and I think it is because of the heads. I have one side by side with a Carlist war british legion fig. The shoulders are the same height but the heads are shorter, probably so you can put the hat on, which is separate and would give the appearance of shortness on the sprue. But I'm looking at them side by side, right now, with a Perry metal fig and they are the same size. They might be a touch thinner but the guy I'm looking at is in a slightly different pose. I don't know if I would notice it if it were not pointed out. |

What rulesets do you have in mind for these? Is anyone doing Fire and Fury regimental with them? |
| Ken Portner | 20 Apr 2008 11:45 a.m. PST |
Rules? Who knows. I'll figure that out later. By the way, if F&F Regimental in actual print or is it just a pdf download? |

I wqould think that somethimg like Volley and Bayonet wuld work better, F&F in 28mm would leave much room to manuever, give that most gamers don't have a huge reach limiting table size. |

What you're seeing is the development of sculpting skills. Let's change perspective, just for a moment – man, look at the big heads on those old Foundry ACW figures. Some weird body proportions mixed in there, too (big hands, big weapons, etc.). Gee, these figs don't hold up to today's figures. Not quite Dixons, but definitely in the prevailing Foundry "style" of the time. Now let's come back to today. The chant is "Give us REALISTIC figures". The term is not defined, but I think it generally refers to a "correcting" of body parts to produce a piece more in harmony with what we think of as "realistic" shape. Just another turn of the "style" wheel? Compare the Foundry AWI with the newer Perry AWI – all parts seem to be in closer proportion to each other, which makes some of the newer figs appear to be smaller. There's no question, however, as to which are a closer approximation of human form – the newer ones. What are we seeing? The continuing improvement of the sculptor. And I think we can all agree – that's a GOOD thing!! |

I don't have any of the plastic ACW yet, but I accept your word that the refinement trend is continuing. Again, I think that's a good thing. YMMV!! |

BTW, there is a single photo on the Perry website in the "on the workbench" section of "greens" of forthcoming metal figures to accompany the plastics. Very droolworthy IMHO. |

Just another turn of the "style" wheel? The world is coming around to my way of thinking. I see light at the end of the tunnel, a new hope, if you will. BTW, the Perry demo game at Salute looked awesome. |

Several metal companies have experienced the same problem with changable headgear and heads. Even back in the 1970s and 1980s, those with assorted heads always seemed a little off (shorter) when compared to fully cast pieces. |

In an earlier post, I mentioned the size difference, but that was compared to Foundry ACW (dismounted Union cavalry, to be precise). When I put the plastic ACW next to my Perry AWI and Sudan stuff, they fit in just fine. GregS |

A friend bought a box and showed off the figures still on the sprue. The bald heads are a bit unnerving, but being able to tilt the hats and caps slightly; the arms and such just a bit, etc, will make them assemble into a nice set of figs. I look forward to seeing them up and fighting. |

Quite easy to model a hatless head as well. |

The Perry website has the cavalry now available to order, click on the box art picture to see the sprues. I have succumbed already. |

"The bald heads are a bit unnerving," sorry but I just had a fit of the giggles over this
I had a vision of making ACW units fighing Perry figures have a -1 on morale tests for facing bald opponents

My cavalry box arrived the other day. Very, very, very nice altogether. |
| kingscarbine | 03 May 2008 9:16 a.m. PST |
Four ACW1 boxes will provide me: 36 Marching Union infantrymen. 24 Skirmishing Union infantrymen. 24 Marching CSA infantrymen. 36 Skirmishing CSA infantrymen. 12 Officers. 12 Drummer/FB/Infantryman. I've been toying with the pieces and there are lots of possible new figs if you like converting stuff. The plastic is easy to work with a sharp craft knife and the extra arms provide what you'll need. If you're good working with putty then you'll end up with dozens of variants. I havn't cavalry yet but the extra pieces will make more conversions possible. |
