Haven't played anything more modern than ACW naval in years, but I've been fighting the urge to game 1/700 WWII with cruisers, destroyers, etc. Maybe use Victory at Sea. They seem to be a fairly popular and simple rule set. Anyway, what size of table would I need for something like this (I really don't want to put little model ships on the floor)? |

Very – to be honest VAS looks crowded with anything more than 1/3000, so you'd probably need to multiply distances by 4 or at least 3, which means the floor
. |

For 1/700, I'd opt for a ballroom or gymnasium floor. |

79th, Here's an idea
. Do some google imaging for the ships that interest you. Look for line elevations (drawings from the side). Download a few, upload them into Word and then scale them to the correct size. Print them out, cut them out, and fix'um so they stand up. Then spread them out on your surface and see if this is really what you want to do. This is how I decided that 1/700 predreds are OK on my livingroom floor or patio, but 1/700 WWII is not. |

I run some 1/700 VaS events at our local con. . . we generally just play on a 20x20 section of floor. |

Well, I'll disagree with the others. I have been using my 1/700 for several years now. You can readily play cruiser and destroyer actions on a 6x8 foot table. There is a little groundscale distortion. However, considering your choices (ie using a 20 foot table) I can live with them. I normally use Grand Fleets from Majestic 12 Games for my WW2 battles. But, I am going to give VAS a shot. I would either use x2 or x2 range modifications. The games look fine. The Ooh and aah factor of using 1/700 far outweighs and scale distortion IMO. Thanks, John |

Scratchbuilder--with advice like that, you gotta be a scratch builder. I think I'll give that a try on my ping pong table and see if I agree with John or not. Thanks. |

I've played 1/700 destroyer and cruiser actions with Action Stations before (6x10?). It works fine on a big table, but we did find that it was very easy to torpedo a cruiser. Since torpedo hits are all die rolling in VAS that won't be a problem. |

"Scratchbuilder--with advice like that, you gotta be a scratch builder." Indeed. I do my own predreds – most of them anyway. |
