Aircraft 68-10357, an MH-53 Pave Low helicopter, is being retired after 38 years of service. This helicopter, in its original configuration as an HH-53, took part in Operation Kingpin, the Son Tay raid in North Vietnam. It later served in Bosnia and Kuwait and was last deployed in Iraq until March 28. It is being transported back to the Air Force Museum at Dayton for display. Another MH-53J that flew in the Son Tay raid was in service until it was lost in combat in Afghanistan in 2002. link All MH-53's are being retired as they return from overseas. Wyatt |

A lot of great history in some of those birds. |

Glad to hear the old warhorse is going to a museum rather than being scrapped :) Cheers Paul. |

It always bothered me to fly around in a helicopter, (which is an unnatural flying thing anyway), that was older than me. |

I wonder if one the old Jolly Greens we used to have at NKP in the 71-72 era could have been converted to an MH53? It feels kind of neat to think something we flew in way back then could have remained in service up until now. |

At one point a Rescue Squadron nested for awhile at McClellan AFB and some of its birds had flown on the SS Mayaguez rescue mission. About two years ago I met an ex-copilot from same who was running for my 4th Congressional District seat. He didn't make it, but wil try again this year and wil try to help him get in, as I thought it'd be kind of refreshing to have somebody who'd had "seen the elephant" especially in special ops represent me. McKinstry were you involved in the fight for Koh Tang Island against the Pathet Lao then? |
