Ok, I have researched them and I think I will invest in the TAG vietnam line. they look very nice. I will augment with a few westwind items for VC and NVA and villagers. a few questions that I have I hope may be answered by my ever knowlegeable fellow TMPers.

1) in the TAG packs with the M60s where they have rucksacks, is the figure holding the weapon pointed down on his right side holding an M60? it is not very clear in the promo picture on the TAG site.

2) in the TAG packs with the Grenade Laucher where they have day packs, is the figure with the M16 pointed up in the right hand carrying a THUMPER in the left (slinged over his arm)?

3) if you have seen the TAG US and Westwind VC and NVA and Viet villiagers together, would the VC NVA and Viets look a bit smaller and therfore, truer to life?

4) How do the TAG NVA and VC measure up with the Westwind VC and NVA?

I know this has probably been discussed before, but your help with these specific issues will aid me greatly.

I am ready to plop down a few hundred bucks with this project, so If anyone knows of a good U.S. supplier of the figures, both TAG and Westwind--who would be willing to provide a quantity discount, I would be interested in speaking with them as well so as to avoid having to order from across the pond if possible.

Thanks for your help!

Hello Custer:

I will have to dig through my collection tonight about questions 1 and 2. And while I think I'm a quality supplier of TAG:

link

I can't help you with the West Wind.

I have heard that the WW figs are smaller than TAG but perhaps someone here actually owns both and can speak definitively?

Extra Crispy,

I lilkely can get some westwind from old glory, I 'm thinking unless they no longer carry them.

I will add you to the list of suppliers. I did spot a supplier that was competitive to your offerings. I will contact the various suppliers once my research is done.

Thanks for the info so far, and await your findings on 1 and 2.

It appears that Old glory no longers carries westwind. So if there are any westwind suppliers, I would be happy to speak with you as well. I am interested in the VC, NVA and villager packs and would be buying multiples of each.

Also if there are any leads on some good viet hooches and other scenic terrain like rice paddies and so forth, I would be appreciative if any one who can direct me to such items.

Custer:

I do not have those packs at home but will check the packs once I'm back in the shop. As for terrain the stuff from Kilroy is just fantastic:

I downloaded the bambo huts. they are nice and will be a good start.

extra crispy,

thanks for the link. I saved it and will investigate the products.

I appreciate everyone's efforts so far.

Now I just need to find 5 huey slicks, a medevac, 2 loaches and I am debating as to pick up 2 cobras or 2 hogs for gunships.

The project I have selected is an Air Cav troop with a red, white and blue team.

I also will pick up some spec ops (2 different LRRPS teams, 2 differnt seal teams, and 2 different MAC SOG teams)

There will be a few left over figs from the blue team, so I will add one platoon of Leg inf and throw in some downed pilots for good measure.

On the other side will be a VC main force(40 figs from westwind), NVA company (120 figs from westwind), and villagers (20 figs from westwind) to confuse the matter.

I have charlie company rules and will use them for the campaign.

The TAG figures are a bit bigger and bulkier than the West Wind figures. The Weapons are noticeably bigger!

I was trying to find a picture of two of each together…

link

the closest I could find is this one:

picture

Of the two guys standing the one closer to the top of the picture is TAG and the lower one is West Wind. I think the dead guys are Battle Honors?

I use them together, but I'm not so fussy as some people are. If you hold them up to each other in front of your face, one is clearly bigger than the other. If you have 50+ figures on the table no one is going to notice… well… I don't…

There's a mix of TAG and West Wind US troops in this one… unfotunately the TAG are all at the back…

Is this the pack you're talking about in Question #1?

Tim,

That is the figure i was inquiring about in question 1. Thank you.

Actually Tim, It is all your fault. LOL

I saw your site and saw how nice the 28mm figs are painted up and decided to embark on this scale. you have inspired me.

I have a lead on some 1/48 scale huey hogs models by italieri. I think I will get 8 and use 2 for gunships, 5 for slicks (with TAG pilots and gunners) and 1 for medevac.

now to find the 2 loaches. I was going to use a new cayuse copter that is designed as a police copter with a T tail. If I modify the tail, It should work dont ya think?

The TAG figures do work with West Wind, however, the heavy weapons (M-79, M-60, RPD) as well as the TAG AK-47 are much larger. The clip on the WW AK-47 is about 1/3 the size of the the TAG model. The M-16 matches up good enought.

Using WW for NVA/VC support weapons and villagers will not be a problem. I freely mix TAG/WW as long as I don't mix the above listed weapons.

FRP Games is the new distributer for West Wind in the U.S.

The 1/48 choppers: currently Hobby Lobby has the Huey gunship for around $10/$12 (add the 40% off coupon for a better deal) it is an early model without as much room for troop as the later transport models.

Hi Custer:

In VNM-002 the grunt with the weapon held down along his right side is holding an M-16, not an M60.

I can't answer #2 just now as I'm sold out of that pack, sorry. I should have it back in stock late next week some time.

I have a lead on a plastic gunship Huey hog. but now I see that forces of valor will be releasing a 1/48 slick in the summer of this year for around 50 bucks. I have their blackhawks and apaches and think those would look sweet. I could modify them as needed with decals. the plus side is that I don't have to assemble them and they would be relativly sturdy. the downside would be they might be kind of heavy and call for reinforced stands for flight and the cost of 6 of them puts me at 300 bucks vs 8 plastics that cost 10 bucks a piece so 8 for 80 or 6 for 300. Which way would you guys go?

Custer7thcav15 Apr 2008 4:16 p.m. PST

Hey Extra Crispy,

Email me at Custer7thcav@comcast.net with some of the corgi options. If you have pics that would be desireable. We can also discuss the TAG items.

I spotted the figure I referred to in question 2 of my original post in a picture from Matakishi's vietnam figures. It is indeed a thumper.

Now to find 1/48 Loaches, Medavac, gunships (I will go with hogs), and slicks and hooches. (this is starting to sound like a bad parody of the wizard of oz) LOL
