Need help TMPers!

My buddy called up all excited that he had this flic "9th Company", so I went on youtube and from what little I saw there ordered the flick (I am VERY excited as this is the first foreign war film since "Brotherhood of War" that ive added to the collection).

Anyway heres where you come in! I am now obsessed with finding more foreign war flics. I have the staples Winter War, Ambush, Brotherhood of War and a few that escape me, but im looking for more!

I am leaning more toward modern conflicts but would love any info on anything out there.

Thanks,
Hal

Stalingrad – imdb.com/title/tt0108211 (wwII)
The Beast – imdb.com/title/tt0094716 (Afganistan)
No Man's Land – imdb.com/title/tt0283509 (Bosnia)
Tae Guk Gi – imdb.com/title/tt0386064 (Korea)

Do you have those ones yet?

Vosper12 Apr 2008 6:20 p.m. PST

Yes, I've included ones outside the ww2/afghan parameters, but they are good movies and worthy of consideration (and it's a bit like gaming, can't focus on just a few genres when there's so much good stuff out there!).

Tae Guk Gi is Brotherhood of War. Awesome flic!!! I actually have Stalingrad as well. Another awesome flic!

I have the Beast as well. Jason Patrick excellent flic. Actually watched it the other day.

So I've added No Mans Land to my list to check out. Any others?

Although I haven't seen it in nearly twenty years, the (Soviet-era) Russian film 'Come & See' about a young Russian partisan, had a very powerful effect on me at the time. It's often mentioned during discussions about the 'Top Ten War Films' and suchlike, so it has quite a few fans.

There was also a film made during WW2 and apparently in the USSR, starring Gregory Peck, about Soviet partisans, which featured (if my memory serves) genuine panzers, Soviet weaponry (including AT rifles) and suchlike. I don't remember what it was called, though I'm sure that someone here will.

Very good Soviet WW2 propaganda film, "Fall of Berlin". It's available with subtitles, some decent battle sceenes, but very Stalinist propaganda: imdb.com/title/tt0041727

Excellent, but for some reason without subtitles, "Liberation" series. Very much like "The Longest Day" or "Bridge too Far", made in 1980's. Follows batlle of Kursk to the fall of Berlin. Great battle sceens, pure war film.

On the similar note, they also made "Stalingrad" at about the same time with Powers Booth as general Chuikov: imdb.com/title/tt0174240 But ignore the comments users, they confusing this film with German made film of the same name. I've never seen this film available in USA, but it's excellent and done by the same director who made "Liberation". It's really worth looking for if you can get it in English or with subtitles.

I would highly recommend 'Come and See' whar war films should be like--Also 'Der Brucke' (The Bridge) a post WW2 German flick about a load of Hitler Youth types sent to defend a bridge--Very good…
The 50's Stalingrad film 'dogs do you want to live forever' is IMHO better than the 90s version…
Are there any Japanese films about WW2 that are worth watching??

Check out the Russian film The Blockhouse, about the Chechnyan war. Excellent.

"Zvezda" is a crapy film, IMO. Equipment looks accurate, but the story is not realistic and battle sceenes are crap. Reminds me a lot of 70's propaganda/adventure/children war films I saw when I was a kid.

"They fought for the motherland" is a better film, made by real veterans, some actors are real veterans. Very nice battles, based on real events. Much better written, more like a war drama.

Framom främsta linjen, Finnish movie about a Swedish-speaking unit. Has several veterans both playing themselves today and as technical advisors.

That Gregory Peck film,I believe was "Days Of Glory",where he played a partisan unit leader. One of his first films.
