Isnt Tang psuedo orange juice?
I think McDonalds use to sell it.
Id rather drink real OJ.

Martin Rapier11 Apr 2008 6:17 a.m. PST

I thought the Tang was the bit of a file or similar tool which went into the handle?

Tango OTOH is the pleasant orange favoured fizzy drink. (Cheque in the post I hope).

Tanga is a port in east africa and an interesting battle in WW1 featuring killer bees.

If you like free speech, you'd better be prepared to accept that other people will say things you don't like.
Get over it.

Particularly because, in this case, the person making this complaint is (I strongly suspect) the same person who regularly puts purposefully inflammatory political quotes and links in his signature file, to the extent that moderators of several mailing lists have put him on moderation. If true, rather ironic, no?

It's a sugary powder with orange flavoring in it that you mix with water. It came out a long time ago and sort of fizzled, pardon the expression, but then a big deal was made out of the fact that it was used by the US space program (for rocket fuel I imagine as I've never read of an astronaut actually saying he or she drank it) and it became popular in the 60s and early 70s.

I remember that from my childhood, but it then fell back into obscurity as a butt of jokes which it remains to this day, though it is still marketed in various forms.

Although the sarcasm in your appraisal of the situation is not missed, in this particular instance you are, sarcasm aside, closer to the truth than you realize (or intend, I'm sure). It's very much a case of inoffensive free speech answered unnecessarily with offensive free speech. You are either overlooking or ignoring (if indeed you even looked at the original) the fact that the original post contained absolutely no political comments or negative or disparaging remarks of any kind, about anyone or anything, period.

Not all "free speech" is equally acceptable, or equally appropriate, or of equal value. When was the last time, Mr. Free Speech Pyruse, that you exceeded your free speech rights to shout "Fire!" in a crowded theater, or use the N-word in public? Respectful, intellectual disagreement is one thing; I have no problems with that. You can even cuss me out if you wish – as long as it's limited to private correspondence, of course. Gratuitous, intentionally disrespectful, hate-motivated, mean-spirited, knee-jerk, publicly-posted ridicule is quite a different matter, and if you are unable to tell the difference between disagreement and extraneous ridicule as you appear, then perhaps you should consider keeping your obviously ill-informed conclusions to yourself until you've learned the difference.

Your post neatly expresses the typical glib argument of those who, upon hearing free speech with which they disagree, lash out with unprovoked, unwarranted, inappropriate and spiteful attacks, as Messrs. Ruddock, Amey, Gaukroger and "Impaler" did, and then piously croak, "Free speech! Free speech!" to justify/excuse their actions if someone objects.

You, Pyruse, impress me as exactly that type of guy. Well, Mr. Free Speech Pyruse, now is your chance to show us how well you practice that acceptance of others saying things you don't like, which you so blithely preach to me:

"Get over it."

Not true, so no. You have me confused with someone else, as I very rarely post, and mostly lurk… mostly.

Excellent; we now move to al-Fayed – esque conspiracey theories.

I'd better tell Prince Phillip that we've been rumbled – may I recommend that you watch out for white Fiat cars, fiendly warning if you get my drift …

No conspiracies required, just friends helping friends, right mate? There all all kinds of friends… like moderator friends, who look the other way when a friend posts something mean-spirited and off-topic, with the implicit friendly understanding that no opposing response will be allowed to post, grin grin wink wink nudge nudge say no more! …and the "With friends (or allies?) like you, who needs Al-Quaeda?" type of friends…

Are you and your friends still driving white Fiats, Mr. Gaukroger?

No Name 312 Apr 2008 2:59 p.m. PST

Killroy44 – I fear that you may have made yourself appear ridiculous to many people here. As someone who is not a member of the DBMMlist group I find it a bit puzzling why you seem to think that I am interested in squabbles there. I know Nik Gaukroger as a respected and established member of TMP. I don't remember reading any of your postings before the start of this thread.

By the way, I did not press the 'squeal' button on you but in your reply to Pyruse it appears to me that you may be infringing the 'no telling people to shut up rule':-

"then perhaps you should consider keeping your obviously ill-informed conclusions to yourself until you've learned the difference"

mbsparta12 Apr 2008 7:19 p.m. PST

FWIW the comment made on the DBMM list was inappropriate. The comment was anti-American and arguably false. While anyone has the right to feel that way, it does not have a place in a gaming discussion on a forum made up of people from a variety at nations. No derogatory comment about the UK was made by Kilroy to spawn the comment. No action was taken by the moderator and there did appear to be, if not support, then definatly not condemnation of the comment, including by Nik. Having said that, the poster let the matter drop which was good. Mr. Kilroy did not provoke that comment although he does have a US Marine Corps ending to his post. Nik also has endings to his posts as do many others. I don't know why Kilroy felt the need to bring this up here. It is a DBMM list matter and over as far as I see it.

Good god, no! We have men to do that for us. What is the point of being part of an establishment conspiracy if you have to get your hands dirty.

Anyway, must go, Phil the Greek is on the other line :-)

You are either overlooking or ignoring (if indeed you even looked at the original) the fact that the original post contained absolutely no political comments or negative or disparaging remarks of any kind, about anyone or anything, period.

Either you are very naive or being deliberately provocative here! The quotation you include in your post is nothing less than an endorsment of the US Marine Corps as a force for good – as implied by the "making a difference" part of the quote. It may surprise you to learn that many people around the world would find that an offensive remark. Try visiting a few Arab countries and canvass some opinion on the US military.
Finally here is a quote from a highly decorated US Marine Corps general about making a difference -
"I spent 33 years and 4 months in active service as a member of our country's most agile military force--the Marine Corps. I served in all commissioned ranks from second lieutenant to Major General. And during that period I spent most of my time being a high-class muscle man for Big Business, for Wall Street and for the bankers. In short, I was a racketeer for capitalism. I suspected I was part of a racket all the time. Now I am sure of it. Like all members of the military profession I never had an original thought until I left the service."
Smedley D. Butler (1881-1940)

Liked Fred's post above- so not much to add.

How this didn't get moved to the CA staggers me.

As a moderator on the DBMM list who has blocked some of Kilroy's messages I often get the urge to smack him in the face for being a Bleeped text.

but my arms aren't long enough…which is probably a good thing.

some people have also sent me (and the other DBMM list moderator) his off-listrantings asking for us to do somethign about it. We didn't, can't and won't do anything about off-list postings.

Kilroy was on moderation on Feb 24 due to abuse of members (and no it wasn't Nik). Had he been slightly moderate (sic) with his comments he would not have been. We do this often and we usually don't announce it – we just do it. then if the person calms down we equally quietly restore their status 'cos we don't want to have to peruse every message on the list!

He's a long way from being the first and i'm pretty sure he won't be the last.

I don't know Nik Gaukroger apart from his postings – although I was approached by a number of people on the list to ask him to stand down as moderator due to a perceived conflict of interest at the time.

Maxshadow14 Apr 2008 3:39 a.m. PST

Why did you have cross-post this thread into the Ancients forum? Apart from the dubious DBMM connection it has nothing to do with us.
Please don't spill any more bar fights over into our cosy little corner. It interrupts our WRG6th players afternoon naps and frightens the Noobs.

Pyruse14 Apr 2008 3:56 a.m. PST

Kilroy – thanks for showing how intolerant you are of views different to your own.
If you don't understand why praising the US Marines might annoy some people, you need to get out more.

Sane Max14 Apr 2008 4:38 a.m. PST

How is saying the Marines were 'making a difference' supportive? Deleted by Moderator, and my cousin 'made a difference' to a Minor Norwegian Politician, for which he was only recently released.

But this thread is a good argument for a 'No Signature Line' rule

I believe Kilroy is at least the third version of that posters online ident either here or on the DBMM list. The sad thing is he/she did have some good points to make every now and then but couldn't get past his issues with the rules and the list members. Hopefully he/she can find another set to focus on and leave well enough alone!

Regardless of personalities, I think Killroy brings up a perfectly valid complaint about themed listings: off-topic comments. Although I think it would have been better presented on the DBMM list. Nevertheless, I think we can all use a refresher on the etiquette of off-topic comments on a themed list; although the Ancients portion of TMP is probably not the best place on TMP to discuss this. I've received gentle reminders that I was off-topic. And, as a moderator, I have had to send out reminders that members were off-topic. I think it is healthy for any themed list to remind members that off-topic comments are not part of this themed list. I think this is true regardless of whether the off-topic is offensive to some. This is also good advice for those of us who are participants of a themed list such as Ancients. It is only polite to not introduce off-topic subjects into this themed list. I've pulled myself away from participating in a discussion because I realized that the topic I was discussing was off-topic. Its called high jacking a thread.

On the other hand, I found Killroys posting to be offensive in at least two respects. One, this is not the proper forum for this discussion. And, two, I don't need to know the names of the suspected offenders. Basic politeness should dictate that the names of the people who are suspected of "high jacking a thread" be not revealed. TMP or any other themed list, only works when politeness is respected by all.

Hey Editor, does this raise me to sainthood or what?

I want to know about the Minor Norwegian Politician, but I guess that's still a Current Affair.

Found Dead in a Hotel Room – or some sort of non-home environment.

As far as Her family are concerned he is the innocent Victim of the Totalitarian Norwegian Regime. After all, what would a Heterosexual man be doing in a Hotel Room with a man he had never met before? Huh?

As far as I am concerned….. well….

THis thread is getting increasingly surreal.

I can confirm that Nik is indeed a card-carrying member of the Satanic Communist League of WRG-Totalitarianists.

As proof, I refer you to his recent editorial role in that most monumental of Oppressive Monocular Organs for Mind Control, the Slingshot, the so-called Front Body of the Society of Ancients. There, he insisted on editing grammar and punctuation against all Human Rights Legislation protecting free speech and the right to illitira….illitra….not being able to write properly.

Yeah, Nik…..bad Nik, naughty Nik.

(reels away in maniacal laughter).
