I just got my terrain mat from terrainguy last night and I'm quite pleased with it. I have those other felt/flock terrain mats (two of them, from different companies but almost identical) and I much prefer the terrtainguy mat. It looks like a mix of grass and soil, which for me is a huge plus. The uniform dark green of my old mats was always a little odd-looking. The terrainguy mat is mounted some something a bit different from the heavy felt stuff of my present mats, and though I have not laid it out on the pingpong table I suspect it will lay flat almost immediately upon being unrolled. It also seems a bit less likely to get creases because of its heavy backing. I have to admit it's not 100% what I thought it was going to be. I suspected when I read the description that it might be a very thick heavyduty mat with flocking on it. I've seen those in the past but have never been able to find someone who sells them. That said, my fault really as I could have asked before buying, and this mat looks very nice so I have no complaints. I also got four of the hills -- as advertised, only one of his hills are of legal size for 15mm Field of Glory gaming, but Mr. Terrainguy has said that he can cut a hill smaller than what he has advertised, so I'm going to get some more for the "large" FoG hill size. I don't personally like the look of the woods he sells, partly because the trees are fixed and I want to be able to move them out of the way without obliterating the terain feature when a unit moves into the wood, but partly because the trees themselves look a bit dodgy. Not sure I'm crazy about the look of the fields either, though I may try them -- you need two for FoG, IIRC. That's just my own preferences talking of course -- I love the look of his rivers and roads and plan to get a bunch of those. Overall these seem like excellent, well-made products, and were promptly delivered and well-packaged. I will definitely be getting more. |

Thanks for the review, Larry. I'm always curious to see how people like terrain products. |

The mats look nice. I was thinking of getting an army blanket ($25) from the army navy store up the block and then spray painting it a few different shades of brown here and there. By the time I am done, it would run me $35. USD I wonder how the paint would hold up on a wool blanket? My only problem is that I don't have the money for a nice mat right now. (My wife and I are cutting back expenses due to the economy.) I would like to get one of these in the future. |

CPBelt I did that with a big piece of polar fleece I picked up last spring when it was on sale. It worked really well. |

You can pick up sheets of material on eBay for a couple of quid a throw. Anything from faux suede and plain cotton, through to waterproofed cushion material and fake leather, in just about any colour you want. I intend getting a couple and experimenting with various treatments- paint, flock, sawdust, etc. Seen a nice waterproofed 'coffee' coloured one that looks like it may work. |

Someone else here has mentioned painting up a canvas painter's drop cloth. I'm going to give that a whirl myself since I have one already. If I don't like the look of it I can always go back to spilling paint on it! |

Joann Fabrics has spary paint for cloth material that you could use to paint the army blanket with. They have differnt shades of brown. |

I think the terrainguy mat is some kind of rubber infused canvas. Not sure though. It's great that people have the time and skills to make their own terrain stuff like that. (Listen to me -- I have my own electric-wire styrofoam cutter. ) But these days I mostly spend my time trying to get myself to paint -- forget about making terrain and mats too! So it's off to terrainguy I go

Larry, thanks for the comments and feedback. I had a customer request forest areas with moveable trees and I did a bunch of those for him and he liked them. This is something I plan to add to the website soon. |

Walmart has a lot of material. I picked up 3 yards of some stuff that will be perfect for a winterish game. $2 USD per yard. $10 USD out the door with a variety of paints included. |
