I picked up a new copy of Akiro Kowasawa's Ran for £9.00 GBP at Fopp Records last weekend a good movie with excellent battle scenes. Excellent price too.

Yes, it is a favorite. I may like "Kagemusha" a little better, though.

Sane Max04 Apr 2008 5:59 a.m. PST

Akiro Kowasawa didn't do 'Ran' or Kagemusha – nor did he do 'The Seven Samurai'

He did 'Wan', 'Kogomoshoi' and 'The Seven Somowoi'.

I have heard good things about 'Thwane of Blaaad' as well.

he he he he…

No mercy whatsoever from Sane Max…

Martin Rapier04 Apr 2008 6:21 a.m. PST

No, it is Jonathan Ross doing the film review.

Mercy? mercy is a disease of Dogs. Or is that Worms? I never show either, just to be on the safe side.

Lovely movie. However, the title always reminds me of A Flock of Seagulls.

The Gonk04 Apr 2008 7:34 a.m. PST

Only when it's not close to me. You know, when Ran's so far away.

Malbrook04 Apr 2008 7:40 a.m. PST

I remember seeing this in college. It was so good I decided to go back the next night and see it again. On the way, I found a fiver on the sidewalk and decided I'd see it a third time.

If I see this movie again I know I'll run out and buy thousands of teeny samurai. Do you have any idea how much it would take to partially capture the visual feel of the movie?

Rotare me, satane!

Ran was very good. Haven't seen it in years, though perhaps it's time for another viewing.

Um, not to be picky, but it's actually Akira Kurosawa:

The Grammer and, Speling Facscist™ has many disciples.

It's "Gratitude" that is the disease of dogs, as Uncle Joe reminds us. Mercy is what falls gently from heaven, unstrained, and steps in the way of our getting our pound of flesh.

I found my copt for $2.00 USD at a flea market. VHS format nut in good condition. I couldn't pass it up.

Sane Max04 Apr 2008 8:23 a.m. PST

The 'Disease of Dogs' quote is from Nuncle Adolf, rather than Unca Joe surely John?

Oops, more fodder for the Grammer and Speling Facscist.

I have a couple of Copts, I picked them up cheap in Egypt.

Pat/Max, I Googled the quote, and three attributed it to Stalin. However, the context of the quote would get me whisked off to the DH in a heartbeat, so I leave it as an exercise for the student. (One site was "Kommunists for Kerry", so take it from there…grin)

Ran was cool, Been many years since I watched a borrowed copy. I especially remember the power of the hateful flute at the end….

I love Ran; it's in the top 10 must have films in my collection.

This week!

Is Kagemusha available in full frame? When it's cut down for the TV screen you miss a lot of stuff. Kurosawa was playing with his first cinerama movie and many scenes need the full picture to see what he was up to.

jpattern204 Apr 2008 11:54 a.m. PST

One of my favorites, too. Saw it twice in the theater, and several times since then.

mweaver04 Apr 2008 11:57 a.m. PST

The Criterion Collection has a release of "Kagemusha" so it will be a widescreen version:

Reading the horribly mangled name of my Favorite Director Ever made me shudder <shudder>.

andygamer04 Apr 2008 4:06 p.m. PST

I understand George Clooney is going to be in a remake--just Google "Also Ran".
