Haythornthwaite's Osprey (MAA 276)on Austrian infantry gives several infantry regiments as having colored waistcoats and or turnbacks in 1757. Is this accurate and, if so, does anyone out there know when white waistcoats and turnbacks became universal? Both the Albertina manuscript and the Bautzener manuscript show white for turnbacks and waistcoats by 1762.

Thanks

Check at leuthenjournal.com Ioannis has a lot of Uniform plates. There you can check the waistcoats and turnbacks.

Austrians entered 7YW in the midst of a process of regularization. White waistcoats and turnbacks were supposed to become the standard for all German regts, but many entered the war with the pre-regularized uniforms. The Bautzen and Albertina illustrations would both show the official pattern, at which most would have arrived sometime during the war.
I believe P&H should provide the details.

There seem to have been a difference in 1757 and then later.
Does anybody have the Wrede – volume about infantry?

For the most part, the waistcoats are white. There are a couple of exceptions, but the only one that comes readily to mind is the Deutschmeiste regiment (blue). Most of the turnbacks are white, but a couple of regiments have colored turnbacks during the SYW.

Pengel and Hurt also give information on coloured turnbacks for Austrian "German" regiments for 1757. Are you enquiring for specific regiments or would you like a listing?

IR1,

A listing would be nice to compare with the Osprey book, but my real question is how long after 1757 (if at all) did these regiments continue to wear colored turnbacks? My guess is, without any informartion to support it,that it was a gradual change to white.

@dbf1676

I agree, in 1762 still some units had coloured turnbacks, Bautzen pictures show still 26, 27 and 50 with coloured turnbacks – according to an article of Bleckwenn in Zeitschrift für Heereskunde.

Pengel and Hurt

"Despite regulations there is a definate possibility that until 1760 when uniform regulations were tightened up that some regiments would have retained the various coloured vests and turnbacks previously issued and therefore it can be assumed that in the early stages of the war these would have been seen on the battlefield. This assumption is based on the fact that in many regiments, drummers retained their coloured coats to this period and even later, a few regiments retained their coloured turnbacks until 1762"

Table
If regiment not listed then = white

Regiment number (1916), vest, turnback (as at 1757)
IR1, red, red
IR2, red, red
IR8, red, red
IR12, blue, blue
IR17, red, red
IR22, blue, red
IR23, blue, blue
IR24, blue, blue
IR26, white, red
IR27, white, blue
IR29, blue, blue
IR30, red, red
IR42, white, blue
IR46, red, red
IR47, blue, blue
IR48, green, green
IR50, white, red
IR55, red, red

Although not stated I assume that the blue red and green colours would vary in shade with each regiment.

Hope this helps
