A B-17 just flew over my house! (North Texas)

Is there an air show this weekend? Maybe at Alliance?

I'm glad it's one of ours!

I used to live near Willow Grove Air Force Base in PA. On several occasions I was able to see a B-17, P-51, and I don't remember what else.

Isn't the Confederate Air Force based out of Texas? This is a group of entheusaists that have restored old aircraft and visit air shows across the USA. They have the bulk of the remaining operating/flyable WWII aircraft in private hands.

Great guys, too!

It's wonderful to both hear the rumble of those 4 large engines in the distance, and then to see them flying through the sky, just as they did 65 years ago in the skies over Europe.

Truly a tremendous experience to behold.

It's the Commemorative Air Force now. PC, don't you know. Fantastic museum in Midland, TX.

Back in Dec of 2006 I was at the Phoenix AZ skyharbor airport waiting the board a plane, and I look up out at the run way, and what is landing but a B-17, The Sentimental Journey. Southwest airliines was having the plane fly in bacause they were having their Christmass party in one of the Hangers at the airport. Watching one of those land at a major airport is a trip let me tell you.

But watching a B-17 take off and land is not that unusual around here. Falcon Field in Mesa (Where the B-17 Sentinmental Journey is based) flies air tours of the bomber most weekends. There is a really good resturant at the end of the runway called Anzio's Landing. You can sit, eat great italian food, and watch WWII aircraft of all types take off in front of you. Not to mention all the civialian craft who fly in and park in front of the resturant to come in for lunch.

If you mean the politically correct "Commemorative" Air Force, why yes. One of the Squadrons is right down the road from me at the West Houston Airport.

They have their own hanger and a small air show every year.

Pretty cool stuff! I mean about the vintage aircraft flying over VSB's house.

"Commemorative" Air Force. Nope. I won't throw this thread into the Current Events board, thank you.

Cool – they are fun to watch. I live near an air base so we get to see them fly in every once in a while – along with other aircraft.

I wouldn't mind a flyover, just as long as they don't try to recreate Dresden in my neighborhood. wink

Virtualscratchbuilder, You're not making bootleg ball bearings in your basement workshop now, are you?

Nice stuff.. I remember when they had an air show at a local AFB (Travis)a few years back, we got a flyover by about a half-dozen vintage planes.. Good mix of planes, too, including my personal favorite, a P-38 Lightning *squee!*

Nice low-altitude prop *roar* as they flew by. None of this 'cropduster' sound, nosiree…

Unless you happened to be in Europe at the time, I imagine grin

Saw some of those planes fly over my old place back in the late 1990's,the municipal airport being only mile or two out.

camelspider11 Mar 2008 8:07 a.m. PST

It's weird when that happens, isn't it? I was with my son summer before last (2006) in Bar Harbor sitting at an outside table at a lobster shack, munching on a bug, when lo and behold a B-29 flies overhead. "What was that plane, daddy?" "A B-29 … holy crap."

wminsing11 Mar 2008 9:22 a.m. PST

My house got buzzed by a B-17 two years back- was sitting with my back to the window talking to my brother when he looks over my shoulder and says 'holy crap!', I turn to see a B-17 at low altitude coming directly over the house. We run outside to watch it fly off. The strangest thing is that we didn't hear it until was directly overhead, and to this day I haven't been able to track down which plane it was- there were no airshows in the Northeast in the month prior or after we sighted the Fortress….

I live about 45 minutes from the Reading, PA airport. Every year at the beginning of June they hold "WWII Weekend" whch is stuffed full of WWII aircraft, re-enactors, vehicles, food, music and more. On one of my first visits I had just parked near the end of the runway and was waiting for the shuttle bus to the gate. There was a deafening roar and everybody got quiet and turned around to see a B-17 taking off. It was so close you felt you could just reach out and touch it. It was one of those "Wow!" moments. Once inside I think I paid a $2.00 USD donation to get a walk through tour of the plane when it returned. They also offer rides in them if you wish to shell out the bucks to go.

Reminds me of a church picnic last year.
Looked up and my jaw dropped because I saw a Fort flying over.
Asked my eldest son if I was seeing things.
He said if I was seeing a B-17, he must be seeing things as well.
Turned out Sentimental Journey was touring our part of the Rockies, but we did not hear that till the nightly news and it left the next day.
Shame.

Plus, it is no longer just $2 USD to go inside; more like $20 USD and $400 USD to go for a ride.
