Does anyone have any suggestions for naval history books on the French and Italian navies, in the period from 1860-1945, in English-language versions? I already know about the various Jane's books, Conway's ATWFS, and am currently reading 'The Development of a Modern Navy, French Naval Policy 1871-1904'. I don't have any trouble finding reference works on the British, US, Japanese, German or even Russian/Soviet navies, but books on the French and Italian seem to be vanishingly rare. Heck, I even have books on the Ottoman and Chinese navies
Any suggestions of books about the Austro-Hungarian anvy would be nice, too. -Kle. |

There's "France's Search for a Battle Fleet – Naval Policy and Naval Power 1898-1914" by Ray Walser or "The Cyrano Fleet – France and It's Navy 1940-1942" by Charles Koburger. Not specifically France/Italy/Austria-Hungary but still very good reading are: The Mediterranean Naval Situation 1908-1914" and "The Naval War in the Mediterranean 1914-1918" both by Paul Halpern. A good book for the Battle of the Otranto Straits is – wait for it – "The Battle of the Otranto Straits" by Paul Halpern. Admiral Horthy's (captain of the Novara at the Otranto Straits) memoirs has a couple of chapters on WWI. |

For Austria-Hungary, "The Habsburg Empire and the Sea: Austrian Naval Policy 1797-1866" and "The Naval Policy of Austria-Hungary, 1876 – 1918" by Lawrence Sondhaus. Despite the titles, they contain a good bit about ships and operations. |

Another author to look for in re: Austria-hungary is Rene Greger. |

The Austrian Navy is well covered in English by Sokol, Sondhaus, and others. About the Italian Navy there is Sadkovich's book: "The Italian Navy in WW2" which unfortunately covers only the 1940-43 period. I don't know any other book in English on the Regia Marina, although Halpern's "A Naval History of WW1" offers some good detail on the WW1 Marina. Regards |
