I'm looking into buying some Valiant 1/900 scale
galleys, but what scale armies would look right?
6mm or (dare I say) 2mm?

Well 6mm is usually somewhere around 1/300 so I think 2mm is "in scale" but you may try Heroics and Ross as they are 5mm and at least show some sort of detail…

I have some of all that Extra mentioned. The 2mm go well with the ships as they are in scale, if you like 2mm (I do). The larger 6mm are way too large and I think that the H&R are also too large. a single man stands taller than a ship!

It depends on how you want to use the ships. Obviously 5/6mm troops cannot be used as crew.Even 2mm are too big.

If you want to use them as offshore support or to use as transports then larger scale figures are OK and you would actually be closer to ground scale as a unit of 5/6mm troops would cover a lot more ground then a galley – so galley models would represent a number of ships.

Here is a link to DBXin6mm site that shows some galleys and may give you some ideas.

"Even 2mm are too big."

Er … no. 6ft = 1800mm (near enough). 1800/2 = 900, so a 2mm is 1/900 scale.

I always thought 2mm was 1:900 scale, ergo, 2mm is fine (or painted rice).

2mm, definitely. 2mm figs and 1/900 ships look great together.
