Hi,
I am interested in finding a book that chronicles the participation of Russian sailors in ground combat during WW2, particularly those sailors belonging to the Black Sea Fleet. The more detailed the treatment of engagements given the better, since I hope to use the material to generate gaming scenarios. Can anyone offer any references? Thanks in advance,
Edward
P.S. As an aside, is anyone aware of an engagement where Soviet sailors and marines fought alongside one another?

"Black Water / Black Death" I think is the title of a book on the Soviet Naval Forces in the Black Sea area.

You might also try: Leonov, Viktor & Gebhardt, James F., "Blood on the Shores : Soviet Naval Commandos in World War II". The ISBN is:1557505063.

The 92 Marine Brigade was one of the first reinforcements sent across the Volga into Stalingrad. Mention is made in many of the books on Stalingrad---Craig's Enemy at the Gates, Beevor's Fateful Seige, etc. Not sure info is detailed enough for scenarion purposes, though.

This was on another forum.
Its about the battle for Novorossiysk. You may find it useful.

---------------

THE BATTLE OF THE CAUCASUS
fought from early July to December 31st.
On September 9th after fierce three-day battles Soviet forces pulled out of most parts of the city of Novorosiisk on the Caucasian coast of the Black Sea. The eastern part of the city was defended by Soviet troops until its complete liberation in September 1943. In appreciation for the courage shown by its defenders the city of Novorosiisk was made Hero City.

Forces in presence clashes at the Kuban peninsula of Novorossiysk. 3 ships are
leaving that city to escape the battle forming up with Russian T34 tanks entering
the city from North and West. German forces are waiting for them and have strong
position in Novorossiysk. Mobile AA are also seen at the beach. Jukas and HS129b
are taking off to go attack those T34 tanks and prevent any further damage from
the Russian.
Here is a good site with some pics….

I own a copy of "Blood on the Shores: Soviet Naval Commandos of World War Two". This book is a personal account of a Naval Commando. Unfortunatly he served in the Baltic and later the Pacific theaters so he does not mention the Black Sea region. I do reccomend this book as an interesting personal account though.

There are details of Soviet Amphibious Ops in the Black Sea here.

And there are Naval Infantry Brigades involved in the Petsamo Kirkenes Operation. You can get Gebhardt's book of the same name for the details.
