Cold War Commander, great set of rules.

I use H&R stuff from Spirit Games.

You can play Cold War Commander at a scale where one tank is one tank and a stand of infantry is a squad. The rules are d6 based and quite simple to play. You could probably also use PeterPig's AK47 rules, but you would have to tweak them a bit yourself to take into account the more high-tech nature of the combatants. Personally, I like the Cold War Commander rules.

For 6mm figs there is Ros/Heroics and Navwar. I'm sure someone imports GHQ from the US as well. In 15mm there is QRF and Skytrex (and PeterPig do modern US infantry as well in their AK47 range). However, you may wish to have a look at Minifigs 12mm, they are very nice miniatures.

Fistful of Tows can be played 1-1.

Try Dirtside II, ostensibly science fiction, but it gives a good modern game too …

Oh and it's free!

We've played FFT2 with 15mm, but you do need a decent sized table, or a floor.

Alan, for smaller skirmish/platoon level games in 15mm, you could look at our FEBA+. It includes data for both individual figures and for fireteams, with data for individual tanks/vehicles:

Hi SM,

FFT (Fist Full of TOWs) is a fablous set.

Tank Wreck is quick play.

The new GHQ set is snazzy.

DSII can be alot of fun.

Cold War commander is great.

However… a rule set that converts extremeely well to moderns is:

Epic-Armageddon!

While a sci-fi set, it has asome great rules mechanisms that make it particularly well-suited to modern play. I've used it for extensive AIW (Arab-Israeli Wars) gameplay.

Shalom,
Maksim-Smelchak.

Spearhead Modern?

Dirtside II, just take out the HEL's and DFFG's….

Whilst I now have Coldwar Commander, I used to play Challenger 2000. An older style of rules, with many tables to consult sometimes, but good once you got used to it. Plus you can get lots of supplementary guides/army lists, and they aren't expensive either.

Mod spearhead/ CW commander and Tankwreck….all good 'uns IMHO. Also take a look at NATO on (I think) the freewargames rules site.

I like Modern Spearhead as well, but it is a larger scale than the OP was asking after – ie, 1 model = 1 platoon rather than 1:1.

Cheers

Where could I get Cold War Commander from – is it purely 6mm? I've got a lot of cold war era and slightly earlier micro stuff I'd like to use, but I'd also like a set of rules that can adapt to using my 20mm stuff at 1:1.

Airland War Modern rules are free too.

1:1 tanks, squad infantry, tactical battles.

But not the most simple rules.

jfleisher20 Feb 2008 6:38 p.m. PST

Heh, anyone remember Leopard Tracks?

My first set of microarmor rules…

Weasel20 Feb 2008 8:12 p.m. PST

What size of game are you after ? If you want a platoon to company level game, my rules "Fast And Dirty" will work a charm. It was written for scifi and near future, but I know several people use it as their main set for present day and cold war gaming.

Link at freewebs.com/weaselfierce. 1-to-1 scale but by no means a skirmish game.

The game focuses on squads or fireteams fighting, unit based fire etc and covers morale, determination, suppression, treatment of wounded and so forth.

Weasel20 Feb 2008 8:13 p.m. PST

Oh.. and the only dice used are D6's.
