What methods are out there to remove the paint jobs of MW minis? without making a nice new plastic blob mech? Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Most of the stuff I've read about repainting clix figs is to not strip the original paint job. Something about the paint they use makes it a better bond thant any primer you use. Most recommend just painting over the original paint job. This is what I've done and had no problems.

@mxconnell

I've heard the same thing but I always wondered about painting over their labels or if you were supposed to try and peel them off with an X-acto knife first? Some of them seem to be almost welded on.

Fighting Pirannha graphics do Dark Age decals which should allow for replacement markings. Other than that using a masking solution prior to painting would be an option.

You could also try just improving the base paintjob as well. That may work.

I had heard using Acetone to strip the paint also works. I never tried it and acetone can be pretty nasty (like all organic solvents), so I'm hesitent to try.

I have used acetone on Heroclix figures. You have to be very carful though because it will eat the plastic. The best way I have come up with is to dip a qtip in acetone and wipe it like an eraser. I also used the inserts from a Chessex case to do the same. You will find that there are several layers of paint on them.

With the Heroclix it I noticed a lot of details that were obscured by the paint before. I have not tried to repaint any after stripping yet.

i've been told that oven cleaner works to strip plastics without eating them…i've not tried it, however…
when i've repainted mechwarrior or heroclix figs i've just gone straight over the top with the new paint, labels notwithstanding..the paint's adhered no problem and the figures are robust enough that there's no appreciable loss of detail….
