I've begun to test my technique for photographing the 1:6000 Figurehead ships I have recently started carrying, in support of the General Quarters rules from ODGW.

Here is the latest incarnation, what do you think?

The idea is to show the whole pack in the upper left, with close ups of each model type (where appropriate). I already can see that I need to add a ruler, and it may be necessary to indicate how many of each close up come in the pack.

Compare to the Plain Jane:

Any suggestions and/or feedback very welcome.

Overall they're much improved. Still two issues:

It looks like there may still be a few depth of field issues, so if you can I'd recommend trying to squeeze in a bit more light to try and get the camera to close the apeture down more.

The ones in the first link are also still coming out too gray and need a touch of level adjustment. Photoshop/The GIMP or most programs should let you tweak this; alternately I'd be willing to volunteer to do this, as it only takes a minute or two each – so long as it's not several hundred pictures involved.

Actually, I was going to say that he had a little too much yellow in the photo, as well as being too dark.

Good choice on the closer shots. If there are three such ships in the package and they're identical, I'd just put "3x" on the photo. And yes, the ruler would work. I'm not sure if the product card is needed. If you ask them nicely, they can probably give you that logo to drop into the photos. If not, send me a good scan, and I'll work it up for you.

One thing I forgot to mention last night is that you may want to give a silver reflector a try. I'd recommend silver to white in this situation because the silver will make the light a little "snappier" and also alter its color temperature slightly (particularly if the light has too much of an orange cast).

A scrap piece of mylar would work well, but you probably already have any number of excellent silver reflectors sitting around: the backs of cds. Might take a bit of fiddling with it, but I think it might help.
