RE Finding GQIII ready done ship logs on the www.

HERE IS A NOTICE FOR ALL GENERAL QUARTERS III PLAYERS.

The downloadable ship logs have already been done for WW2. Just not released
yet. These have been in preparation for TWO YEARS. Yes….its taken that
long because it misses out almost nothing! This has been a huge job and has
taken up most of my spare time in the past two years. When not waving a
paint brush, or writing my game of THE BATTLE OF THE ATLANTIC (In
preparation for release) I have been working on these logs.

In full colour. They cover every navy and every ship of every country where
possible. With very large classes a selection of ships is shown and some
blank ones provided so players can add the name of their favourite models.
Each type is shown in several formats if it had major changes during the war
As can be seen from the complete listing below, there is almost nothing not
covered. Even a large range of merchant ships has been included.

The logs show armament changes, radar changes, changes in AA value and so
forth. They show the number of funnels and various other information needed
in play, including aircraft, hangars, catapults etc as well as changes or
removal of these.

These logs are designed at BUSINESS CARD size. They have been extensively
test played for two years and speed the whole GQIII system up even more.
Once downloaded and printed out, they can be laminated, then cut out. Or put
into plastic sleeves. The cards are of uniform size. The colours have been
chosen not only for the identification of rules issues, but also for high
visibility and ease of use.

In test games it has been found they are most convenient when used in a pack
like cards. Players can quickly look through and if laminated, just use a
felt pen to cross off damages etc.

Each navy has distinct colours and their flags are displayed. This feature
came out of test play when it was found they were far easier to sort out,
and store, if the colours for each nation were individually distinctive.
The logs have been produced in co-operation with Lonnie Gill and ODGW to
ensure adherence to the rules of GQIII and that a high standard of product
was maintained.

It has been arranged that they will become available on the ODGW web site,
but I do not yet have a date. They will be in downloadable Pdf format for a
fee yet to be finalised. This road has been taken because of the extremely
high cost of printing. As Pdf downloads the price can be kept low. Players
can print out what they want.

Navies and ship types so far completed are as follows.

USN Battleships to Aircraft carriers.
US Cruisers.
US Destroyers to Destroyer Escorts.
US Auxiliaries and Minesweepers.
US Submarines.
MERCHANT SHIPS OF THE COMBATTANT POWERS. A selection of a wide range of
types, size and shape.

Japanese Submarines.

Romania.
Yugoslavia.
Poland.
The Netherlands.
Norway.
The Soviet Union.
Finland.

Later releases will include BRAZIL, ARGENTINA and other Neutral countries.

I cannot give you a release date yet. But I can advise you that virtually
all are ready for release. It will be just a matter of what ODGW can arrange

Test player responses over the past two years have been extremely positive
and most of those who have used these cards have indicated they prefer them
to returning to the current log style presented in GQIII.

Ok Mal I am interested Do you know what they will cost?

Mal Wright Fezian27 Jan 2008 11:53 a.m. PST

Not yet mate. Would you like to see a sample?

I'm still in the GQ/GQ II generation, and wondering in what ways FAI is an improvement over GQII:

I don't dare ask how GQIII is better than the original.

Chalk and cheese Allen.
Much better feel of what is going on with individual ships.

Yet Lonnie has been able to retain all the ease of play. He's a very clever bloke when it comes to writing rules.

David Manley27 Jan 2008 12:46 p.m. PST

Any chance of posting a sample to the GQ yahoo group files area?

aecurtis Fezian27 Jan 2008 12:53 p.m. PST

"Chalk and cheese Allen.

Sorry, but what does that mean? I can't write on a blackboard with a piece of cheese. Well, not very well…

Does that mean a layer of detail has been added to ships? From an earlier thread when you commented that some stats were battle-specific, that's what it sounds like.

In my old age, I'm trying to avoid extra complexity.

Thanks,

Allen

Allen,
Since FAI is an extension of GQ3, the same statements re: GQ3 would apply to FAI. Much more detailed damage model, the weapons data is nation specific (no more generic guns), torpedo system much more detailed, just to mention the highlights. Ease of play still in place (actually somewhat easier than GQ1/2).

aecurtis Fezian27 Jan 2008 6:51 p.m. PST

Thanks! I suppose I should check it out. I may pick Norm's (at Scale Specialties) brain about this. In fact, I should have thought of that first!

I responded on the yahoo group. Yes I'd like to see samples but primarily I want a release date. ;-)

BrianW28 Jan 2008 10:16 a.m. PST

Mal,
I just bought FAI, and am thinking about GQ3 since some "extras" mentioned in FAI are in there. I would like to see some of the samples.

Would you like to see a sample?

If you can post one here at TMP, how about my father's RCN ship, the HMCS Kapuskasing (J 326), an Algerine Class minesweeper?

Mal Wright Fezian29 Jan 2008 5:39 a.m. PST

I'll do a ship log of that ship for you. That class is already in the Canadian file.

Mal Wright Fezian29 Jan 2008 5:45 a.m. PST

"primarily I want a release date. ;-)"

That's a ticklish question. Its taken two years just to prepare them. They will probably be made available in Pdf format for players to download. Just how that can be done is still being worked out. Probably each navy divided into groups, such as Battleship, carriers, cruisers, destroyers, escorts, submarines, for the large nations. Some of the small can be dealt with as a single Pdf.
Hopefully the problems can be overcome soon and ODGW can start making them available. In the meantime if everyone is patient, it WILL happen.
I hope that anyone with any concept of how many ships are involved, and how much work that took to put them into logs for every phase of WW2, they will also understand that its not easy to present in an easy download.

HMSResolution29 Jan 2008 9:18 a.m. PST

I think the real question here is…will that mighty implement of war, HMS Morris Dance, be present?

Mal Wright Fezian29 Jan 2008 3:19 p.m. PST

I already have the 'Dance class' in the lists! grin
So yes!

andygamer30 Jan 2008 9:15 p.m. PST

Thank you, Mal.
