i was wondering if anyone knows the color schemes for the spanish units at the smaller battle of Saguntum. the french left behind a small rearguard to guard their flank while the main force of french and spanish duked it out. These are the spanish forces Blake sent to try and catch the french from behind.

Miranda's Division:
Valencia Militia….
Castilla….

Caza Militia….
Avila Militia….

Obispo's Division:
CdC Militia…
Doyle…

Aragon Volunteers….
2nd Avila Militia….
Dar. Volunteers….

Villacampa's Division:
Princess Militia…..(i think this is the Princesa regiment)
Soria Milita…

Caza. ….
Mulma Volunteers….
Aragon Volunteers….

San Juan's Division:
Rey Dragoons….
Reina Dragoons…..
de Cuinca Hussars….
Aragon Hussars….
Caza Hussars….

Horse artillery uniforms….

as you can see, i have the units that fought against a very small french division. Osprey's Spanish Armies (2) mentions a select (and i stress) few of the units posted.

any help is greatly appreciated.

Lacking any better information, you might get some ideas from the uniforms described in the 7th post down in this thread: TMP link .

this is definitely a tall order. thank you for the link. currently i am working on the cavalry division (san juan). when i get them painted i will post pictures. after this i will be working on Obispo's division. the miniatures are a combination of AB and battle honors.

Hi MeanGreen

This looked quite a difficult question, so I had a look at the Ospreys and Funcken to see what is the maximum that might be extracted from them and asked myself what I would (will?) do for these formations. I've only looked at the infantry so far, but:

1st, 2nd & 3rd of Avila, Daroca and Don Carlos:

I don't know anything about these units, except that the Avila Militia started the war in Valencia (so the genesis of these units may as well be in Valencia as actually in Avila) so the generic 'Infantry Fusilier, Eastern Spain, 1811, plate G1 will have to do (Sky blue coatee and panntaloons, white belts, black hat). I suppose the Daroca regiment might equally have the 'Aragon' uniform described later.

Volontarios de Castilla:

I don't recognize this unit either – possibly the same as the Tiradores or the Cazadores? In which case the default fusilier again, or:

1st Tiradores de Castilla (1809): Blue coatee, green collar and cuffs, white turnbacks, grey pantaloons

Cazadores de Castilla (1811): Blue coatee and pantaloons, crimson cuffs, green lapels, white turnbacks and waistcoats

1st, 2nd & 3rd Cazadores de Valencia and Vol de Olihuela:

The Osprey suggests Shako with brass plate and red cords, blue jacket with scarlet collar and cuffs, white linen kilts, long stockings and sandals.

Carinena (1809):

Blue coatee, scarlet collar and cuffs, white turnbacks and pantaloons, shako

Tiradores de Doyle:

Red coat, white waistcoat and breeches, round hats?

Princesa:

Blue coatee, white lapels, violet collar and cuffs, linen pantaloons, brown greatcoat

Soria: I wonder which one is meant? The line regiment, the volontarios or the cazadores? Are the last two in fact the same?

Anyway, the Cazadores (1809): Brown ponchos, white shirts
volontarios (1810): blue coatee and pantaloons, straw-coloured collae and cuff flaps, green lapels and cuffs
Soria (line) (1814): Blue coatee and pantaloons, scarlet collar and cuffs, white turnbacks, black half-gaiters

Molina:

Blue jacket, scarlet collar, linen pantaloons

or alternatively:

Blue coatee, crimson collar, cuffs and turnbacks, yellow collar lace,

brown pantaloons and greatcoats

Valencia (1810):

Blue coatee, blue lapels, red collars, cuffs and turnbacks, black helmets with white crest (called a light regiment in the Osprey, but I think it's the same one)

1st and 2nd Volontarios de Aragon:

I might put them either in the uniform described for the volunteers of Tereul in the Osprey, i.e. blue jacket with scarlet (or violet) collar and cuffs, buff breeches and a black round hat.

There is a very smart looking Spanish Horse Artillery officer in the 1812-14 Osprey – blue coatee, scarlet collar and lapels, white waistcoat, red baggy trousers, black fur busby.

How are you getting on so far?

to Whirlwind……

Thanks for replying. i had given up on receiving an answer. i really appreciate you deciphering the acronyms for the different spanish units. the OOB's i have classify infantry as either line or militia. i am not to worried about the militia. one providence raised 6 militia regiments. only the 6th regiment's uniforms were known. i plan on painting militia as a hodge podge of different colored jackets, pants, etc. the only reason i listed them was for closure. i did some snooping online and found a decent list of spanish uniforms from 1808. Here is what i have discovered:

the infantry is all classified as wearing blue jackets and white trousers. The list only lists line units and light infantry regiments. There is no mention of militia (for obvious reasons). your descriptions match up with that of my list.

Rey Line Cav: Crimson collar, Scarlet/gold lapels/piping,
scarlet cuffs, blue jackets, buff trousers, buff
waistcoat

Reina Line Cav: light blue collar, blue/Scarlet
lapels/piping, Blue cuffs, blue jackets, buff
trousers, buff waistcoat.

i based the Aragon Hussars off of plate E-2 from the Osprey Spanish armies (2).

Aragon hussars: Dark blue jacket & trousers, red collar and cuffs, white trim on collar and cuffs, white lace. no Pelisse is portrayed.

de Cuinca Hussars: ??

Caza Hussars: ??

Rey and Reina Line cavalry are almost identical. apparently there were also a rey and reina dragoon regiments too. distinguishing which is which is tough. the osprey (1808-1812) lists every cavalry regiment drawn up in 1811. a paragraph down the book says it would be impossible to list all the cavalry regiments. the examples listed in the color plates and the few represented by the text are just a taste of the diversity of the different spanish cavalry units.

the back cover of the osprey says "An unrivaled source of information on organization, uniforms…..". the list i found on the internet competes with the osprey hand over foot. i understand space limits, costs, etc. i have always thought osprey did a poor job with spanish military during the napoleonic wars.

given the wide variety of spanish uniforms i do not think the authors could really pin point which uniforms were worn by a particular unit. there were so many, not much organization, etc etc.

enough ranting. thanks for the help, whirlwind.

Hi MeanGreen

Could you post a link to the website you found? I'm always up for expanding my knowledge of the Spanish Army in the Napoleonic Wars.

Good luck with the rest of your project.

Whirlwind….

it will take me a minute to find the link for it. if i am not mistaken the link for this list was somewhere else in the napoleonic forums. there is a club from new zealand who plays giant 28mm napoleonic battles. i know their website had some really cool OOB's for peninsular battles. One of the being Baylen (a personal favorite). like i said. give me some time to dig it up.

i cannot get the link thing to work. i tried the example on the FAQ's and even that did not work. copying and pasting is tedious. please bear with me…..i tried.

link

here you go. there is a good bit of information on that website.
