It is an experience that every wargamer should try at least once. Highly recommended. |

As all the games sell out a week or so after their ad in Miniature Wargames, who needs a website? Great fun, had many a great game there, and Scarborough offers an, er, interesting night out!!! if you've had the Privilege ;-) John |

There is a yahoo group called In The Grand Manner moderated by Gerry Elliot, who also runs the WHC. Try that for more information. There used to be a local wargame club that had pictures of the games at the WHC on their web site, but I can't recall what the name or the URL of the clubsite was. |

We arent't local to WHC but have been there several times as a Club. If you can get enough people (minimum of 8 if I remember correctly) you can have the place to yourselves. Gerry will then fit you in between the advertised weekends. We have always enjoyed the weekends playing either Napoleonics or ACW. Neither period is of great personal interest but I really do have a great time. You are unlikely to command so many 28mm troops anywhere else! A few smallish pics can be found here: link |

They just write to me every year with their schedule. To echo John, as they sell every place within a week, why do they need a website?? |

Martin, well not you if they write to you every year. Ivan. |

I went once and was incredibly disappointed in everything except the fact that it was the chance to play on a huge table
The trouble was that the nature of the rules meant that the troops spent the whole weekend advancing only about four feet across it. It was meant to be the Battle of Ligny, but the terrain didn't resemble Ligny in the slightest, the orders of battle had on the slightest, fletting, passing resemblance to Ligny and we had total, complete and utter freedom to redeploy our forces
All of which meant that it wasn't the Battle of Ligny at all, but was merely some random encounter-battle between Napoleon and Bluecher. The experience was then 'enlivened' by rules discussions about cavalry being able to interpenetrate artillery while the gunners are there, but when the guns are abandoned, they become strangely impassable
I'm sure it would be great with a bunch of mates and I'm sure that it CAN be a great social experience, but I was there with a bunch of cocks who were determined to wring every last illogical rule and random bit of punctuation from Grand Manner in order to ensure that they had the maximum possible game advantage all during the day and all during the evening, were happy to sit, sipping their weak lemon drinks over a game of 'Snap' in front of the fire (they called it 'Tragic The Gathering' or something, but I know 'Snap' when I see it), before having an early night curled up with a copy of Grand Manner

The notable exception to the above was the Saint that is Trevor Body (formerly of the Village Green and now of Body's Banners) and if nothign else, the weekend did spark off a firm friendship with that worthy gentleman. |
