I have finally finished two 24-bear regiments of SYW Teddy Bears, from Eureka Miniatures, as a Christmas present for my 9-year daughter. I have posted some pictures of the same on my blog, Der Alte Fritz Journal: altefritz.blogspot.com Merry Christmas to everyone on TMP! Fritz PS: 1806 French pictures to be posted tomorrow – Christmas Day. That's a 1:10 Napoleonic unit of 72 figures. |

Jim, a great project, and thanks for sharing it with us, but you know that the time you spend with your daughter, playing with her bears, will be the best of your Christmas gifts! Merry Christmas to you and yours! |

We were watching two of the grandsons Sunday afternoon as my daughter was ill and my son-in-law was doing some last minute shopping. Little Jimbo, who is seven, always checks to see what I've painted since his last visit. He noticed a Teddy Bear pirate that I'm working on for his cousin. Now he and his brother want me to paint some pirates for them. It seems the 12 figure units of Toy Town guardsmen and infantry in shakos I did for them was just a beginning. Kids seem to love these figures. When I first saw them I asked myself "Why didn't someone think of this sooner". It must take a certain type of mind, like Nic Robson's, to bring forth such whimsical figures. I hope you and your daughter enjoy many hours together with the Teddy Bear regiments. |

Did you buy the rules that go with them, too, Fritz? (Something about trying to capture honey jars, if I'm not mistaken.) |

P.S. That was a really nice touch making the musicians polar bear teddies. |

Are the rules on Eureka site as I can't see them and I want to play a fun game with these great figures Jules |
Der Alte Fritz | 24 Dec 2007 5:48 p.m. PST |
Eureka has some rules, but I was just going to make up my own simple set of rules. I like the idea of trying to capture pots of honey as the objective of the game. Thanks for the kind comments everyone, and Merry Christmas to all! |

And to all a good fight! ;^) |

Merry Xmas, great Teddy Bears! Alte Fritz can I ask you how you get your text justified in your posts? |
doug redshirt | 25 Dec 2007 10:02 a.m. PST |
Such a great idea, I saw the toy soldiers and thought wouldnt it be fun to paint up a couple of units for my 8 year old daughter. Now that my boys are all off to college and the military, its just her to play with. While I enjoy playing boardgames everyday with her, some minis would be fun too. |

Bartholomew: when you are in the "compose" mode in blogspot, there are a series of small icons above the typing space. One of them looks like a bunch of even length parallel lines. That is the full justify mode. You can also justify left or right. Sometimes I can't seem to get a space in between paragraph, no matter how many spaces I put in. then I go to html mode and enter the spaces there. |

Where do you find the rules for these guys that Eureka put out? (Did they put out rules for these guys?) Cheers, Ben. |

You should put a button dot on the left ears of one of the regiments and tell your daughter that it's Von Steiff's Infantry Regiment. And I think that there's a page link called "Rules" at the Eureka site, Ben. |

Fritz you have inspired me :-) My 5 week old daughter is sleeping at the moment, but little does she realise that before long her regiments will hopefully be ready to tae the field :-). One thought I had though – how do you intend handling 'kills' in the rules? Is this a bit much for a 9 year old to handle?? Would 'kils' be better of being something else, like simply knocked over etc etc etc. How do you intend handling this in your rules? Or is this simply a newly-overprotective father? I guess videogames handle it in all the gory detail, but somehow I find it hard to game little teddy bear deaths (is there a casulaty figure with his stuffing showing :-)?). Daryl |

Take a look at the Fuzzy Heroes for a "G" rated alternative to 'Kills' for results. Teddy struggled to overcome his energy loss from Really Naughty Nancy's spray attack from her Stinky Perfume Spritzer of Doom attack but, alas, it was 'sleepy time' for our hero – perhaps Perky Pig could Overcome her evil dreams of a Messy room with her Frenzy attack. Gracias, Glenn |

Or you could replace "kills" with a morale result of "running away" off the table? |
balticbattles | 26 Dec 2007 3:33 p.m. PST |
I hadn't seen the figures before, but I LOVE them – especially the cavalry! I'm going to get a unit of dragoons and add them to my force next time we play AWI or SYW – and see if anyone notices! |
hos459 | 26 Dec 2007 6:12 p.m. PST |
I think I'll write some quick rules, with the teddy bears firing their corks to tag each other 'it', at which point the teddy is 'out of the game'. :-) |

I dont think kills would be a problem with my daughter. She thinks the best movies have zombies and other assorted monsters in them. She is a rather blood thirsty 8 year old. She understands the difference between made up stuff like movies and real life. I am the one in the family who doesnt like gorey movies. But then again in real life, mangled, bullet riddled, smashed, dismembered and flayed bodies dont bother me at all. |

since the bears are armed with Pop-guns, I agree with DAF use of bears going to the hospital with a sore head. Personally, I don't see any need to rush the kids along the road to "mangled, bullet riddled, smashed, dismembered and flayed bodies", altho it certainly depends on the child as to how upsetting it is. I have one niece who at 17 is very sensitive and a 33yo girlfriend who catches bugs in her apartment and releases them (and a tongue-lashing I got when I killed a stink bug in the apartment w/o permission). Meanwhile, my 8yo nephew has to be reminded not to needlessly stomp on every bug he sees. go figure. a. |
