Well it looks like for Christmas I'll be able to get the ‘mercenary' Empire army for Warhammer that I've been planning. I'm aiming to use Foundry conquistadors as the bulk of the troops:

I also like the look of the Gamezone conquistador-style Empire troops, specifically the halberdiers:

Is anyone able to tel me how well the two ranges fit together?

Size wise they should be pretty much the same. The Gamezone might be slightly bigger, but not a lot.

I have both next to each other on display at the moment, but I cannot for the life of me remember is the size difference is noticealbe (I'm at work at the moment).

Slightly different periods for the armour though. But in a fantasy army I suppose that won't matter too much.

I don't have either, but you might also look into Eureka Conquistadors. The cavalry are probably some of the best ever sculpted, and far less expensive than Foundry and Gamezone:

I have Foundry Mercenaries from their Renaissance range and they are a little bit "slighter" than Eureka, but not by much. I do not know if the Ren Mercs compare in size to the Foundry Conquistadors.

You may also wish to look into ranges for "border reivers" or late 16th century figures carried by many other companies, since you are going for the "Spanish" look--morions, poofy sleeves and pants, etc., such as Vendel, Old Glory (one of their better ranges in my opinion), Graven Images, et al. They all tend to be less expensive.

The Gamezones are slighty bulkier than the Foundry (El Dorado) Conquistadores.

The El Dorados, in turn, are slightly bulkier than the Eureka Conquistadores.

The Eureka Conquistadores are slighly bulkier than the older Foundry Renaissance sculpts.

Ok, thanks.

I think they should both be ok then, as they have the tall, gangly Empire militia to go alongside them, so I gather I need troops on the larger side.

CC, maybe you could answer this. Would I be able to get another rank in front of these guys:

Or are their spears lowered too low for that?

Bombot,

The link doesn't seem to open for me. :(

I noticed problems with the site earlier but I think it's ok now. It's a picture of the Gamezone spearmen (or pikemen, as they call them) with the lowered spears.

Wow. I hadn't seen that pack. Must be newer than the ones I have.

Honestly, to avoid problems fitting the figures, I've done away with the metal bases and remounted the figures on more user friendly plastic ones from GW.

Ah, I noticed on a previous thread about Gamezone that people mentioned they came on separate bases. Is that not always the case? It does seem from the pictures I've looked at that the bases are fixed.

Cacique Caribe04 Dec 2007 5:55 p.m. PST

They have separate metal bases.

Wow. I hadn't seen that pack either. Very nice sculpts.

Artemis05 Dec 2007 11:23 a.m. PST

Actually Gamezone have swapped out the metal bases for clear plastic ones now. There are still lots of blisters with metal bases in however but they are being faded out as stock sells and is replaced with the plastic ones.

Those Gamezone pike men are standing in charge pike for horse, wo they would form your front rank of a pike block

you want a rank behind them with charge pike (that is the pike held out horizontally at shoulder level.

The Game zone ones are very nice (cheers CC) I love the Eureka Conquistadors so am biased here but for me the ragged appearance of the troops makes them look battle hardened and ready for pillage and plunder..for GW they are ideal as Pirazzos lost legion

Gamezone only do that pose for the halberds, for some strange reason. Not sure I'd want them anyway, as they might look correct, but you'd have no chance of connecting to the unit front on with an enemy formation. That's why I'd like to compromise and put the angled spear guys in the second rank.

Plus, with the command crew, wizards, etc in the front rank, I'd only be able to fit one or two in that front, so if I want those cool looking guys, it's second rank or nothing, lol!

Lowtardog05 Dec 2007 4:36 p.m. PST

You are right Bombot, however the hands are sculpted to the weapons so you could interchange :0)that could give you a bit of variety. How many figures would you have in a unit for WHFB?

Bombot06 Dec 2007 2:29 a.m. PST

I'd be doing a block of 25 troops (5x5). However, in the front rank I'd have a standard bearer and musician and at least one other character, and more likely two. That only leaves space for one, maybe two spearmen, so capturing that full dynamic look in game is rather tricky.

I think what I'll do is buy slightly more than I need and play around :o)

Lowtardog06 Dec 2007 9:40 a.m. PST

Good Idea, if going the way you are, peraps then the first 2 ranks in that grounded charged pike pose. They certainly look nice
