There are some nice battles in the first book to re-create and the the number of ships aren't huge. A couple of carriers some planes and lots of fun. We are thinking of playing a whole naval campaign based around Hawaii falling to a Japanese invasion and occupation. Should be good fun.

I was not overly impressed by those two books. I like Turtledove, but he's gotten into a bit of a rut and those two were his weakest to date.

For some WW1-era alternate battles, you have "The Battle of Five Navies" and the US conquest of the Sandwich Islands from his "World War" series.

Wyatt, that's the Battle of the Three Navies (US, UK, & Japan) from the Great War series (World War being the WWII where aliens invade). The US battleship getting it's rudder jammed is a bit of a hoot.

For me, Turtledove's great ideas have always been spoiled by his miserable unlikeable characters.
It's just not worth suffering through his people to get to his scenarios.

Jakar – you're absolutely right.

Great.

Now I've combined/confused Turtledove with Tolkien.

Next, I'll be wondering why the Orcs running Gringott's bank don't go "Waaaaaargh!" when you make a deposit.

Maybe the Goblins do when Harry Potter isn't there. Who can say? :P
