I took a few liberties with these Armaments in Miniature 15mm resin P-39s. Not wanting the standard OD over gray lend lease look, I borrowed the paint scheme from some P-400s (close kin to the P-39) that were intended for the British but ended up serving with the Soviets. These mniis are bound for the Flames of War table top.

The basic paint scheme is a dark green & sea gray over a lighter sea gray. The spinners and fuselage bands on two of the models are the duck egg green/pastel green (they didn't get painted over before they planes were put into use against the Germans). I painted Russian green (pale blue gray on the bottom wing) over the areas that would have had the RAF roundels and tail flash. Pastels provide the soot & exhaust discoloration.

Models are from Armaments in miniature (great kits).
Decals are from I-94 (great decals) with the exception for the numbers which are leftovers from my bits box.
Primer Rust Oleum aerosol.
Paintes – Vallejo Model Color.

Beautiful.
I love the cockpit effects. Must steal.

I just painted four 1/300 P-39s two days ago for Check Your Six. They're really cool looking planes. Nice job on the "big" scale ones!

Oh, very nice indeed. I've alwyas been a fan of the P-39. It's just odd-looking enough to be neat.

No models should look that good. :)

The Russ loved the P-39 because they fought it at the altitudes they liked the best, under 20,000 ft. Plus they had perspex canopies. Russian canopies had a cellulous fiber that made them hard to see out of after they yellowed; pilots in Russian built planes would fly and fight with the canopy pulled back so they could look around and see something. The Guards Fighter Regiments used them effectively: the P-39's all came with a radio. I love the P-39 in Russia.

One of these days they'll come out with a 1/144 P-39. I hope.

Crown Models did one. Also Arii did one, as well as the King Cobra, I just got 5 of them off Ebay.
