Hi all

Well I got some of Baccus's 6mm cattle for my Zulu games………

They are cattle with what look like long horns on them

What colour should they be???
Would herds be mixed ??? ie some black, some brown, some brown/white or black/white or would herds be all the same colour???

I've found various websites and they have a wealth of information but nothing concrete when the breed was introduced to Africa

Any suggestions??
Cheers
MH

Zulu shields were cowhide. You need only look at them to get ideas. B&W.

Yep, shields were Black, Black with white spots, White with black spots, Brown, Brown with Black, Mottled patterned, White, Red (cattle red), Red with Black, Red with White. Feel free to paint the cattle any way you wish. There were even grey pattern cattle, though not used in the shield patterns of the zulus in 1879, but some of the neighbor nations had them.

Go wild. Cattle has been part of that region for hundreds of years. Maybe longer, since there are some natural breeds.

Some herds were bred to a single color/pattern, others were not. If it's the King's personal herd, it's all white, but that's the real exception.

The amount of white of sheilds was indicative of the seniority of the unit.

The veteran, elite cattle would be mostly white -those that had bloodied their horns. The newly raised young cattle units would be mostly black.
