Has anyone read the above book? My father is going to order it along with "Last Stand of the Tin Can Sailor's." Also has anyone read "Broken Sword" by the folks from combinedfleet.com. Thanks in advance.

I've got the paperback ed. of "Last Stand" and its on my reading pile right now. From the reviews I've read on all three books they are well worth ordering. Sounds like you've gotten some good ones.

Can't speak for the first 2, but 'Shattered Sword' is excellent. Well researched, finely detailed and very readable.
I was looking over 'Ship of Ghosts' just last night, but decided to wait.

I've read 'Ship of Ghosts' and thought it was very good. A little over half the book is about the POW camps. It was good enough that I gave it tomy mother to read, and she actually did.
Another good book on the Houston is 'The Last Battle Station'.

I really enjoyed "Ship of Ghosts." It puts a personal face on the abject failure of ABDA and the nightmare that was Sunda Strait. Then we get to follow some of the individual sailors as they cope with becoming POW's and what they were forced to go through and do.

Gents;

"Ship of Ghosts" a superb account of the ordeal suffered by some of the longest held PoWs in the Far East – very difficult to read as it is brutally factual in their treatment.

However, it added nothing new to the details of USS Houston's time in the Pacific from 7 December 1941 to 1 March 1942 – in fact, it is downright skimpy in that area.

So, it depends on what you are looking for …
