I'm looking for a set of rules that can handle large battles (approximately 60 ships a side), set in the Roman period. Record keeping needs to be kept to a minimum and I'm not a fan of the "random card" order system. Anybody got any ideas? |

What Scale? There are many and I would recommend you check out some of the titles on the Roman Seas website. I have been working on a set of rules for some five years (Raven vs Ram) but am still in concept playtesting. My goal is to do Economis with about 60 ships of 15-20mm size. I also game in all the other smaller scales for galleys. VR James Mattes |

Hey James, I also game in 15mm, I'm up to some 30 ships, any chance I can get a working copy of your rules? Mike |

I suggest you buy the new version of War Galley by GMT games. It is a boardgame, but would work fine for minis with or without a hex grid IMO. |

Dare I suggest Corvus? Do not be put off by the fact that v2 includes squadron lists for about 12 ships a side. Last game I played with it had about 70 ships on one side and about 35 on the other. I wrote it to avoid record keeping and play a quick game. It is written for both 1:650 scale ships and the 1:1200 ships. You can get a free, very basic download from my website:- link You can get a much better presented version with better text, better suggested squadron lists, card fleets and card sheets with markers from the Society of Ancients for £5.00 GBP Richard Lee |

We've been experimenting with Corvus to do 30+ per side and so far, it does the trick. |

Check out my review or a Corvus game I ran a couple of weeks ago. lshm.net I had about 20 ships per side and it worked well. I just changed tow things. One thing I did differently was organizing the forces in squadrons and basing the break point per squadron instead of for the entire force as it's written in the rules. Also, the rules recommend using centimeters for 1:1200 scale ships instead of inches. I stuck with the inch measurements and didn't have any problems. I plan to do 30 or more ships per side at MillenniumCon if I receive my order soon. Tom |

Have you thought of writing your own rules? You can make them as complicated, fast, or as bloody as you want. Also you can make sure that you get the feel of the period that you want. |

Check out the rules we have recently submitted to darkcitygames.com for production. Our rules can handle upwards of 100 ships if so desired, yet are simple enough and with minimal bookkeeping that they can be played by 5th graders. Email info@darkcitygames.com for more information. Regards, Derek |

I use my fleet organised into squadrons, I have not set a ny conditions for individual squadrons breaking. The concept sound like fun. Corvus was developed for wargamers to have fun and not get bogged down with minute details, so try what suits you best. With a bit of luck this might stimulate more interest in this woefully underdeveloped area of wargaming. |
