Yay! We finally played!
(TheMackster here btw, not wifey Gold Dragon)
We tried the simple into scenario first where the Graf Spee had to evade/destroy the British ships Ajax, Achilles, and Exeter. My friends played and I ref'd and referenced the rules for them.
The Graf Spee was doing well considering it was outnumbered 3-1 until the Exeter hammered it with a devastating broadside + torpedo salvo that left it crippled and easy meat.
The second game I had them each select 2 cruisers + 3 destroyers and the Brits and Japanese squared off. The Japanese long lance torpedoes were devastating, especially since this was our first game with them and caught all of us by surprise. The Japs gutted a Brit cruiser with their initial salvo and took the lead, only to have the Brit destroyers return the favour once they reached their own torpedo range. When we called it a night there were 2 Brit destroyers facing 3 Japanese ones left, all 4 cruisers had been sunk by main guns and torpedoes, mostly the torpedoes.
Very fun games and I've already finished our new 6x4 plywood mapboard to replace the original 6x3 one we used for our initial games.
Q- How in heck do you successfully defend yourself against torpedo attacks from fast destroyer squadrons? (especially the longer ranged Japanese torpedoes?) With their target numbers of 6+ speed modifier I can't think of a way to nail them before they reach torpedo range and hammer your cruisers. or is this just how it should work?
We were wondering if an all-destroyer fleet would slaughter a mixed fleet with cruisers and such due to massive opening torpedo attacks?
Next games we're adding submarines and then aircraft carriers to the fleets so we'll finally be trying out all the rules. Advice wanted & thanks for reading!
