I cannot decide which gallys to go with. The 1/600 Xyston or the 1/1200 Langton. I will be playing on a 4ft by 6 ft table. There would be at most 5-10 ships a side. Your advice/help would be apprciated. I do not have access to the models. I can only go by the pictures I see. I have to mail order them |

With that big table and that few number of ship's I'd go with Xyston. Now mind you, I have about 40 each of 1/1200 Langton and 1/900 Navwar but no Xyston. I just think the 1/1200 or 1/900 scale ships would seem lost on that big of a table. I've done about 15 1/1200 scale ships per side on a 4x3 table and that seemed a little sparse. I plan to do a larger game in a few weeks where the playable area will be about 4x4 with 20 ships per side. |

Grenadier drop me a PM when you do your battle and let me know how it goes. I like big battles as well. Also what rules do you use. I am interested in the period, but do not know which rules to use. There are several good ones out there. |

Certainly. I plan to take pictures so I'll let you know where I post them. I'm working on my own set of rules for large scale battles where each model represents roughly 5 – 7 ships. |

I have to agree with Grenadier Books. I have 8-10 Langton galleys I got to experiment with. they are high quality models, but 10-20 on such a large table will look less than impressive. On the other hand, if you are like me and saying you'll stick to a few a side until you start painting and then realize you "need" larger fleets, go with the Langton ships. One nice benefit is that langton also make gorgeous 1/1200 scale buildings and scenery so you can have a nice little port to fight over. |

At 5 to 10 per side, I'd go Xyston but if you think that could morph into 20+ per, I'd go Langton. |

Or you could go with the Roman Seas 1/300 paper galleys. They look pretty darned nice, and you can use 1/300 figures for crews and and marines. At that small a number of ships, I imagine you might want to focus on boarding anyway. Doug |

I have thought about roman seas, but have held back because my building skills stink. |

Well lets see I have Navwar, Langston, Xyston, Ramming line, Old Glory 15mm, and 1/72 and looking at 10mm Roman Seas. For the size you have to game and number I would go with Xyston. Although Langston are very very nice I am looking to do larger battles with them 30-60 ships. Brookhurst is having a sale on Xyston at this time as well! VR James Mattes |

Grenadier Books 10 Aug 2007 9:38 a.m. PST I'm working on my own set of rules for large scale battles where each model represents roughly 5 – 7 ships. Got a Yahoo group for your rules yet? Or come over to Wooden Walls or Galley Wars. VR James Mattes |

Vojvoda, I'm on Wooden Walls as well. I don't have a yahoo group for my rules – their not that polished yet but I hope they will be soon. I've made a few changes to the rules recently in anticipation of the upcoming game but haven't incorporated them into the written rules yet. Once I get the changes incorporated I'll post them to wooden walls. Tom |

Belisarius – if I can manage to put together a paper trireme, I'm absolutely certain you can too. :-) Doug |

That didn't sound right – i.e. your building skills cannot possibly be worse than mine. Doug |

Na I have got you topped. The wife refuse to allow me to have any tools or sharp objects to fix things around the house. |

I'm staring to get into the Galley stuff. This past weekend at a local convention ConquestSF in Northern Calif,i bought 2 packs of Navwar Ancient Galley's and the Navwar set of Ancient Naval rules. As for miniatures these are the following that i'm thinking of- 1.Valiant 2.Navwar 3.Langton 4.Xyston With the help of some friends the idea that's floating around in my head is getting a mix of Navwar and Langton mini's. The table space i have to work with is 6ft x 6ft so what do you think? Captain Gideon |

On a 6 by 6 you can go with any of those. Depends on how many ships you plan to use on one side. I am starting to go in the opposite direction. I think movement is too restrictive in many rules I am looking at adjusting my rules to six movement speeds and four classification of ships. I have some movement that can go up to 12 inches so I am going to need more space. VR James Mattes |

The Langton models are very nice and because of the scale, they allow you to have large fleets, so that Actium etc become a realistic project, within reason of course. Anyway, just my personal opinion. |
