Guys, Recently I have found myself talking about retro sci-fi almost constantly. I am on a Buck Rodgers (both eras), Flash Gordon, and such binge. I have G.A.F.D.O.Z. from Killer B Games and it does a great job of capturing the feel of the genre. Rat Trap is going to be publishing their ruleset too. Now
we have Pulp. We have VSF. We don't really have a term for Bubble Helmet wearing, jet pack using, two-fisted action. It isn't really Pulp. It falls well after VSF. Star Wars is a bit too high-tech. Hence the phrase Bubble Helmet popped into my head and just kinda stuck. Maybe we can get a board under sci-fi for it as well? |

Hmmmm. It's not bad, but it just doesn't launch my rocket (so to speak). I really think it's more like the next evolution of Pulp Gaming, to be honest. This is especially true (for me) because it seems to pull so heavily from the Fantastic Tales and Amazing Stories pulp magazines. Of course, I really don't play this genre, so my vote shouldn't count for too much
But I do have some Bob Murch Rocket Men and Rich's woman with a rocket pack, so who knows? Maybe someday I'll catch up on my cowboys and take a stab at it. |

I was thinking Serial Sci-Fi also. Since the majority of this genre comes from the serial shorts. |

Serial and retro-Sci-Fi sounds good to me.

Retro Future is a cool oxymoron. |

Scientification is what Hugo Gernsback coined it when he started Amazing Stories and I've always liked that name just because it is so clumsy and hard to say! Pulp Scientification! Marc |

Pulp Sci-fi is what would make me think of the ray gun types. |

How about "serial skirmish"? That's Flash Gordon and Rocketman to me. |

you're all wrong! Here's the perfect choice:
ROCKETS AND RAY-GUNS! It's all about the Ray-guns, and it's more about Rockets (and Rocketmen, Rocketeers, etc.) than Space Ships or Starships. |

A term taht an ex-roommate of mine coined for that genre was 'retro-futurism'. I feel that works the best :) |

I think the best term is Retro-SciFi. You used it yourself in the subject line, so at least subliminally, you agree! |

nah bubble helmet is good ;) |

Retro-future or retro-scifi are usually how I refer to it. As was pointed out, its the oxymoron that makes it stick. |

Bubble Helmet-Brass Bikini Seems to sum up the covers for the genre |

I always thought of it as Classical Sci-Fi. I grew up in the 60s and 70s reading the old masters. So for me it will always be the classics. |

Broadsword's suggestion is my favorite (maybe with a change to Rayguns & Rocketships?). :) |
