I just received some of Brigade Games' brand new 28mm LVT Crew for my LVT4's that I am running at Historicon next week. I have Googled the heck out of it and can't find any references on how to paint these Navy fellows. I found a painting in a WW II art book I own which shows them as having light blue shirts, but I can't tell what color the life vests or helmets are. I assume that the pants are dungarees which would be dark blue. Can anybody steer me to a good reference for these guys, or tell me approximate colors? They don't have to be exact, but as close as possible would make me feel better about the whole thing. Thanks for any help! |

LVT(Amtrac)crews were marines and so dressed as such. Landing craft were crewed by the navy and often coast guard and they would be wearing the blue. Bruce |

That's true, I have read that they were Marines. I just forgot! So what color are the life preservers? Would a khaki or olive drab work? |

You have two choices(guesses) on the life preservers. I can't track down original sources. They were navy issue. The only photos I have showing both navy crews and Marines in life vests are black and white and they appear to be similiar in color. The navy life jackets would be a dark sea gray. The other school of thought is that the Marines would have dyed the life jackets. So freshly dyed they would be several shades darker than the USMC uniforms. Personally, I'm using the 2nd option to keep things muted but the contrast with a dark sea gray would not be overwhelming. I still have some feelers out and will let you know if I hear anything. Thanks, Bruce! I probably should have contacted you in the first place, but I didn't want to bother you. |
