When I was a kid I read a paperback book published in the US by Ballentine which was a first person account by a pilot in the RAF Coastal Command. It was part of a series they did which included Zero by Saburo Saki and others. As my poor memory recalls their was a painting of a Beaufort on the cover. Anyone remember the title/author? Is it still available?

The only CC book I know of is 'Fly West' by Australian Ivan Southall, who flew on Sunderlands.

Even if it isn't the one it is a fantastic book…as well as Southalls own experiences there are accounts of notable incidents, such as the time a Sunderland fought off eight JU88's in the Bay of Biscay and an account of the famous destruction of 3 U-Boats which tried to fight it out on the surface as a group (IIRC a U-Flak and 2 Milch-cows? anyone know?).

Well recommended.

I can recommend "Coastal Command in Action 1939-1945" by Roy Conyers Nesbit ISBN 0 7509 1565 X

Nesbitts 'The Strike Wings' is also a great read . It analyses the Coastal Command strike groups of Mosquito's, Beauforts, Beaufighters etc that hit German coastal convoys in France, Holland, Norway etc.

Allen, I think I know that cover image – if I'm right then the title of the book you're talking about is "

"Of Wind & Water" (J Sanders, ISBN: 1853100692) – abebooks have at least two copies listed – by Airlife

Thanks for the help fellows. I do not believe these are the book that I am looking for but they all sound great and I am going to start looking for them.

'The Right of the Line' by John Terraine is a great book on the RAF in WW2.
I read it from the library about 25 years ago so I couldn't comment on its availability, but I know it had a strong section on Coastal Command.

Terraine's books are easy to get hold of. A must-have is 'Business In Great Waters', probably THE best account of the U-Boat campaigns of WWI and WWII.

A friend found my book and it turns out it is not Coastal Command. Title is "Torpedo Pilot" by Ralph Barker. Now to see if I still think it is a great read. I did order Of Wind and Water which I am also looking forward to.

I have a friend called John Evans, who is THE authority and author on Sunderlands and coastal command operations in general. He may be able to find the book you're looking for. Have a google for his company: Pater Church Books.

I recently picked a copy of 'Coastal Command – The Air Ministry account of the part played by Coastal Command in the battle of the seas 1939-1942' (bit of a mouthful I know).

A great softback book with loads of info.

:)
