I was in walmart yesterday and found 3 packs of organizing baskets for 97¢ and 2 large ones for $1.25 USD

I found the blue round thing(water filter) for 50¢ in the discount isle.

I picked up a number of them and and a couple pieces of granny grating. With paint and glue it ran for under $20 USD for the whole lot.

Assemble steps;
Cut off underside nubs
Glue granny grating to roof
Glue cardboard inside so you cannot see in
I made a template and made a bunch of cereal box toppers.
Glue the templates to the roof

I now have to add all the doors and windows.

I picked up a number of hose filters a while ago picture
I plan on using these for the windows.

I will be adding ladders to all of the buildings so I can stack them.

I will be making a number of bridges as well. They will just be cardboard, and made like the roof of buildings.

Oh one more thing;

I used a paper punch and used it on a piece of laminate floor tile. I got a pile of round stickable pieces. Just have to be careful that as they fill up the putch, they don't loose the paper backing and get stuck in there.

I am using them as detailing.

Pictors Studio07 Jul 2007 12:57 p.m. PST

Very nice. That is a pretty creative use of some pretty ordinary things. Good job.

Ed the Two Hour Wargames guy07 Jul 2007 1:10 p.m. PST

Thanks! And they can double as figure carriers as well. I'm on it today!
Contact me at twohourwargames at Yahoo dot com and I'll send you a free 5150 PDF for the ideas.

Good job; I could buy those baskets downtown at the dollar store they've got piles of them…

HistoriFigs07 Jul 2007 2:27 p.m. PST

Very nice!

I might just have to make something along the same lines – one always needs some good Sci-fi terrian, and everyday items can makes some amazing 'stuff'.

Cacique Caribe07 Jul 2007 2:41 p.m. PST

Dropzonetoe,

That looks fantastic!

A while back, when Matakishi posted his off-world colony tutorial, I bought a bunch of Sterilite trays so I could try exactly the same thing you've done:

Since the look I am after is one with small barracks and other structures, I opted for the smaller trays.

When I get to putting mine together, I am sure I will refer to this thread to find out how you did for covering the vertical grooves on the trays.

Thanks for sharing, and please keep us posted on the progress!

Oh, yes, one more thing . . .

For the perimeter of the enclosure, I plan to use another very, very cheap option:

Great work. Please post more pictures when you get them painted. : )

Renevent07 Jul 2007 4:31 p.m. PST

You have just inspired me….NICE work.
also, DAMM Ed, that was a hell of a nice thing to do… I've been meaning to pick up ATZ for a while, that just bumped it right to the top of my "to-buy" list. Expect the order this week.

Veteran Cosmic Rocker07 Jul 2007 5:06 p.m. PST

That is ingenious. Thanks for sharing the ideas.

Ed the Two Hour Wargames guy07 Jul 2007 5:20 p.m. PST

Went to Wally World and found the trays you were talking abut. Then I nosed around and found these for 97 cents each. Took them home and need minor surgery. Used PowerPoint for the interior glass, doorways, and roofs, and viola!

Here's a 28mm Star Trek away team from Victory Games investigating with Alpha Forge mini security bots and the THW van in the background taking notes!

Thanks again,
Ed

Nice job Ed. The folks at skankgame.com have an article on making highrise ruins out of milk crates.

There is a metallic plastic party streamer that has a wavey texture. Short lengths of it are PERFECT for corrugated cardboard.

Crusoe the Painter07 Jul 2007 8:47 p.m. PST

er corrugated sheet metal

StarfuryXL507 Jul 2007 9:03 p.m. PST

There was another game table with the same idea posted a couple of days ago. It shows some variations on the idea.

Good call Crusoe. I forgot all about that stuff. Looks like Party Plus tomorrow!
Saw the milk crate idea and another great idea.

Nice work Drop Zone – inspires me to get my Sci-Fi buildings on the go!

First off;

Huge thanks to Ed, for the very generous offer. I cannot wait to get a game going and test out the rules.

Thanks to everyone else thats been responding. It always make a project go faster when you have someone waiting to see where it's going.

If I learned anything out of this project, it's that templates are a life saver.

I have started painting a couple of the finished ones. Here is a small teaser pic of where it's going.

Note this is just the rough first paint layer. I plan on adding a lot more detail as I go.

Enjoy

Looking good so far DropZone!

Captain Apathy09 Jul 2007 1:14 p.m. PST

I love the choice of color. Very industrial and very prfab sci-fi colonial. What color is that?

Thieses09 Jul 2007 1:24 p.m. PST

I've had a bunch of ED's stackable milk crates for some time. I bought mine at a Dollar store. Dropzonetoe's "desk organizers" are very cool. I love very cheap scenery that looks cool. TMP is the best. Thanks guys.

postal12415 Jul 2007 5:42 a.m. PST

Looks cool. I managed to find 8 of the smaller containers last night. But what is Granny grating?

Postal,

It's found in all stores that have a sewing/yarn section.

I got mine at walmart for around $1.00 USD a sheet. It is very useful stuff.

Dropzonetoe Fezian15 Jul 2007 2:33 p.m. PST

Small update,

I have been busy in a remodeling job. 100 year old houses need a lot of work to get fixed up :)

I have gotten almost all the of the buildings under coated. I have progressed in the paint scheme.
