Hi, Im trying to find books on medievil chineses military, mainly the sung (song). So if anyone out there can recommend a book or too, which has illustrations. I already have the osprey book. Thanks |

The osprey siege and naval books for the far east of this period have probably better pictures of Sung troops if you are wanting them as painting guides. Did you see the articles in WI last year? They are available as pdf downloads if not – quite a few pics of painted minis. Other places to see painted figs – TAG, Curteys, Outpost Wargames websites. WAB forum website. Are you seeking anything in particular – I have a few books in Chinese language if you want to get in touch mp.hassell67@btinternet.com |

Go to deremilitari.org and download the article about the Mongol siege of Xiangyang. It covers the Song military. At the moment there really aren't any books (in english) on the Song military. Bits and pieces of the Song Shi (official history of the Song), and parts of a Song military manual have been translated but that is about it. I do have a couple of papers written by Prof. Peter Lorge that give some good description of training the Song military. Let me know if you would like a copy. The Osprey series on medieval Chinese are quite poor and leave a lot to be desired. Cheers Chris |

Hi, Sorry to be so late. One of the best books (if you can find a copy) I have found is: The Armies and Enemies of Ancient China, by John P. Greer War Games Research Group Publication, 1976. pages 1-120. I covers lots of different armies, between 1027 B.C. and 1286 A.D., but with only 120 pages isn't super comprehensive. Jon |

The Greer book should be avoided – lots of errors I'm afraid :-( |

Hi Nik, Caution is always a good thing, when discussing most books. I find errors in almost everything in some form or another:( This book is a nice overview, and you are right about errors, but at least its gets one going. Thanks. Jon |
