I'm wanting to buy and paint a Kievan Rus or slightly later medieval Russian army. I've been searching the net for army composition information and models. I was wondering if any of the historical gamers had advice on units and where to buy models? So far I'm most interested in Gripping Beast models. How do they compare to Old Glory as far as size is concerned? Could they be mixed? Does anyone have better pics of the Old Glory models? The ones on their website are so blurry I can't tell if I'd be interested in spending money on them. What other companies offer Rus or ancient slave models? |

My 28mm Rus are mostly Old Glory with a few Essex mixed in. I am too technologically challenged to provide pics, but IMHO they are nice detailed figures, with a wild mix of poses and dress. Essex only make two specifically Rus figures (an axe-armed druzhina and an unarmoured, helmeted Slavic spearman, but by substituting a few shields and weapons here and there got a nice amount of variation especially when mixed with the OG figures (quite compatible size-wise as well). I suspect the OG figures might be a little smaller than the GB guys (I am only going on a comparison with my GB Berbers and Turkish foot here as I don't have any GB Rus). I bought a couple of packs of Black Tree Viking archers to provide a bit of missile support; these guys are definitely larger again than OG/Essex. Hope this is of some use to you. Cheers, Paul. |

The 4 packs of OG russ are pretty nice – especially the mounted nobles there aee also a couple of useful packs in the OG Mongols in Europe range. Some "town Militia and peasant archers . This is another army I have to get painted and I've had the 6 packs for 15 months now

Thanks for the replies everybody. I like what I see at gripping beast, but it's hard to beat OG's prices. Still undecided where to drop my money but this helped some. |

Molniya Miniatures has some very nice figures. They might be early enough to be used as Rus, but they're still pretty. members.aol.com/molniyafigs |

Do not miss OG Steppe Nobles figures. They are perfect for Rus nobility who adopted steppe equipment and tactics. Will work for 11th to 14th century. |

trooper153, Thanks for the Molniya link. They're a bit later than what I was thinking of bit still nice. And they do have a couple of unit types I was interested in, dvor and crossbowmen. From what I know of the time period the models are pretty accurate. I'm considering using this as an army for Armies of Arcana(historicals and fantasy mixed) so some inaccuracy in time periods won't matter much. Good looking models is the important thing. I was considering using Byzantine or other models to fill out my army with a little more variety. Molniya will help as an example and a few figures. IGWARG1, do you have a link? I've looked at OG a few times but I'm not sure I've seen the exact figures you mentioned. |

I'm looking to buy ancient peasants roughly 500 AD and before. No metal usage, fire-hardened spears and pitchforks, to defend their village from the Great (or White) Russians coming down the rivers from the north. Trying to find 60-80 peasants and 15-20 Great Russians with real spears and axes and shields (nothing we would think of as armor). any ideas in 25 mm or 28 mm? Thanks! Herb |
