I'm convinced I will base my ships. Thank all who responded to my earlier questions. What methods are in use out there for texturing and/or painting the bases? |

Woodlands Scenics sells a flexible paste that can be sculpted/pushed around with a brush to make acceptable waves and wakes. Most art stores sell a Liquitex Gel Medium in either gloss or semi-gloss that works just as well. Both can be painted, the Liquitex can have color added to it before application. |

I use crumpled up aluminum foil. |

Vallejo makes a translucent get in a variety of blues. You dapple it on to your base and let dry. They even make a foam version so you can make whitecaps, wakes etc. |

Also, you can find plastic "water glass" which has a water texture on it. You can go with Plastruct or Evergreen – or you can find it at a home improvement store as its used for flourescent light fixtures. Wyatt |

I use wax paper waded up and then glued to the base for my 1/700 scale ships. I have also used it on my 1:3000 ships. After dry paint and drybrush seal with satin and it REALLY looks like water. Pretty simple system. Thanks, John |

If you have a look in my yahoo folders link, in any of the aztec terrain folders you'll see some work in progress shots, i have modelled quite a bit of "sea" terrain for it, if you like the effect i'll post up how its done link |

The Vallejo gel is called "Water Effects" and I use #26204, Atlantic Blue. There are Mediterranean and Pacific versions. |

Yes I stock all the water gels. I'm mostly out of stock right now but should have a resupply in by the end of the week: link There is a nice article on how to use it on the Vallejo site. Once on the main site select English and then in the drop down box "Water and Stone" acrylicosvallejo.com Cheers, Mark "Extra Crispy" Severin Owner, ScaleCreep.com |

Renaissance Ink X-fine Flocking Gel is great for water. When texturing water around ships allow the gel to tack up and add ripples. The X-fine Gel dries clear and/or can be painted once dry. Check the web site renaissanceink.net |

There are lots of suggestions among the threads here: link Unlike many other fora, their search function actually works rather well. Cheers, Skeptic
