During WW2 what colour were the merchant navy/ civilian convoy ships (i.e. the freighters)painted? Did they retain their peace time colour (example white hull with the red and black at sea level) or were they painted grey? |

Mostly grey but you can see a variety of camouflage schemes as well depending on nation and situation,. The Italians had some wild schemes in the Med and the USNR fleet train stuff in the Pacific had lots of stuff in the Ms 31, 32 &33 schemes. I'm not as sure about the North Atlantic but I remember reading that several ships on teh Murmansk run used low visibility schemes. |

I'm pretty sure the peacetime colors went under a layer of grey paint. In some cases, they received camo patterns such as what were used in WW1. |
