Are there any books by Axis ship captains? I mean small ships here destroyer or smaller. I would really like to find something written about either anti-submarine or escort vessels.

Closest I've come across is "Japanese Destroyer Captain".

I suppose that explains why their anti-sub campaigns had such a hard time?

As I am researching Convoys of WW2, I can tell you that it is very hard to find. Italian ASW is the easiest.
